Books about Sibling Rivalry
June 2005
we are dealing with a version of the same issues parents have
faced since parents were invented -- namely, sibling rivalry.
our young kids (a boy and a girl) are 3 years apart. they are
mostly sweet, good natured, well-mannered and kind and generous
with everyone ... except each other. when together, they are
often mean and hateful and drive each other (and us) nuts.
I'm sure that there are some great books about this, but I
don't have a clue as to what they are. Recommendations?

I can recommend Siblings Without Rivalry by Adele Faber & Elaine
Mazlish. It has numerous scenarios described as well as step by
step role playing to problem solve.

''Siblings without Rivalry'' by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish is a classic.

You're right. There are a lot of books about siblings out
there. If you don't have twins, then I would recommend
starting with Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish's ''Siblings
Without Rivalry.'' Parents Place in Marin and San Francisco
often have classes by the same name, based upon the book. I
think its a really good starting point for how to work with the
issue. http://fabermazlish.com/frmain.htm
That's their website. I'm not paid by them...I'm a therapist
and parent educator who has found their work really helpful and
very useable.
Good luck!

No matter how many books I've read on the topic, my favorite
remains the old standby ''Siblings Without Rivalry,'' by Faber and
Mazlish.

The book, Siblings without Rivalry is great. It's by the same authors that wrote
How to talk so kids will listen, how to listen so kids will talk, which is by far my
most favorite and used parenting book. They are both available everywhere.

Faber and Mazlich have one of the best, classic books on sibling
rivalry. Also recommend the Love and Logic folks in Colorado.
Check out their over 100 items concerning parenting at
www.loveandlogic.com. You can hear Jim Fay, one of the
founders, on a radio program I did January 11 (Parenting Teens
with Love and Logic) by signing on to www.worldtalkradio.com,
clicking on ''Full Power Living'' (Tuesdays at 9 a.m.) and
scrolling down on the archives to the bottom of the list. He
offers some great advice!

I highly recommend ''Siblings Without Rivalry: How to Help Your
Children Live Together So You Can Live Too'' by Adele Faber,
Elaine Mazlish.
