I'm 20 years old and live on the Emeryville/Oakland border.
I'm a recent Mills College graduate (I majored in English
and Public Policy). I've tutored middle/high school students
since my junior year of high school, but would love the
opportunity to work with younger children as well.

My past focus has been on reading comprehension, grammar,
and writing. If your student is reading a specific work, I
will study it with them. I help with homework, test prep,
and essay writing among other things. Essay help includes
helping create content as well as editing and draft-review.

I am available every day starting at 3pm. My rate is
typically $15/20 per hour, but I am flexible. Feel free to
contact me any time. I'm here to help!

I offer private tutoring for high school students in
reading comprehension and composition writing. I hold an
MA in English Composition along with a Certificate in the
Teaching of Post Secondary Reading Instruction from SFSU.
In addition, I also hold a BA in Literature from the UCSC.
I work with students in both areas of reading and writing,
first with reading comprehension and retention strategies
such as pre-reading strategies, annotation and post-
reading strategies. Then, I help students to learn essay
writing strategies, viewing writing as a process, from
brainstorming, to organizing, to drafting and finally, to
revising and editing. I've taught and tutored both high
school and college level students, and I know what is
expected of student writing once they reach college. I
work with students from wherever they are academically
toward becoming successful readers and writers as well as
learners and thinkers. Sliding scale fees available.

Your child can be an outstanding writer!
All he or she needs is to learn the tricks of the trade. As an award-winning,
Berkeley-based, llongtime columnist for the Contra Costa Times and Oakland
Tribune, I can teach your child how to write essays that grab the reader's
attention from the very first word.
Outstanding writing is obviously crucial for college applications, in which your
child needs to stand out amidst a sea of applicants, but also in on-going
writing assignments from 4th grade to high school. Teachers are far more
inclined to look favorably on a student's papers if they don't have to hack
through the excess verbiage with a machete, and when the writer's true voice
and critical thinking abilities shine through the pages.
I have a B.A. in history from Yale and a J.D. in law from UC Berkeley. In
addition, I have interviewed students for Yale for many years and know what
colleges are seeking. Please visit my website,

What makes an essay?
•	First, an idea.
•	Second, the clarity of its expression.
•	Third, the rigor of its argument.
•	Fourth, the vivacity of its language.
•	Fifth, its grammatical correctness.
Writing is a creative act and the creativity does not stop
with the initial idea. It extends through the whole writing
process, bringing forward the freshness of the thinking that
goes into it. Grammatical correctness is not a straitjacket
that kills creativity. Grammar works throughout an essay to
clarify, strengthen, and vivify writing. Writing is a way of
holding thinking still long enough to make it deep, sharp,
and original. Writing is thinking in its most challenging
form.

I have a high school teaching credential in English and
years of experience as an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley
in related fields. For help writing essays, college
applications, or creative writing, please email me. My fees

I specialize in helping students feel more confident about
their writing; in fact, many of my students will tell you I
helped them believe in themselves as writers. Some of them
became writers themselves as a result of taking my classes.

I have been a classroom teacher for more than 11 years. My
classroom experience has mostly been with high schoolers,
but I have also taught and tutored 4th-8th grade. I am an
expert in creating curriculum that works for the individual
student. My tutoring services include a good deal of
preparation outside of individual sessions.

I believe strong writers are also strong readers, and I
emphasize reading comprehension skills and strategies in my
sessions with students.

I am taking some time off from regular classroom teaching to
work on my own writing, so I am available to come to your
home or meet at school.

Dear Parents: I can offer your child the highest quality

essay writing, and in classroom reading/writing skills. I

I teach children to read. I work mostly with students in
grades K-5, but I have also had success with high school
students who are reading at extremely low grade levels. I
rely primarily on the Reading Revolution method, which is a
multi-sensory approach that includes both phonics and
comprehension components. The students learn through games
and reading controlled texts and good books in a warm,
supportive environment. My goal is to help each student to
achieve success as a reader and, in almost every case, to
enjoy reading. I have a teaching credential and over 5
years' experience teaching reading as a private tutor. I
teach in Berkeley, near Ashby and Telegraph Aves.

A satisfied parent had this to say: ''Nancy uses her
expertise, creativity, patience, compassion, and fun
kinesthetic activities to help my son experience success in
reading. He's gone from a non-reader to reading by
flashlight under the covers.''

Words and story are at the center of my life as a long-
published novelist, magazine writer, and former college
and high school English teacher. Using creative nonfiction
techniques, I coach high school seniors in the writing of
college essays that make admissions officers' eyes light
up. Together we find a compelling topic and develop a
structure. We edit, polish, and proofread. The student
writes a story that conveys a personal passion, reveals so
much more than the dry facts of the application, and moves
her paperwork from the ''Maybe'' to the ''You betcha!'' pile.

assignment, I want my students to have a personal stake in
their work while also fulfilling the assignment's
requirements. I emphasize the brainstorming and
organization process, and work patiently through editing
in a way that helps students hear and identify their own
mistakes.

If you'd be interested in learning more about me, or wish
to hear from my references, please don't hesitate to
contact me. Thanks for your time.

I am a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz with a B.A. in
Linguistics and French. During my time at the university, I
worked with writing professor Brij Lunine as a writing
assistant for college students. I met with students both
individually and in group settings where we worked on
brainstorming, organizing and editing papers. I would love
to tutor students in the Bay Area to help them improve their
writing skills. Because I graduated from UC Santa Cruz last
Spring, I am very familiar with MLA formatting and other
standards of high school and college writing. I could help
students with school papers, research, test preparation and
college applications. I am also happy to teach traditional
grammar lessons. I charge $25 an hour for individual lessons.

Dear Parents: I can offer your child the highest quality
professional tutoring in SAT/test preparation, in college
essay writing, and in classroom reading/writing skills. I
have tutored E.Bay high school students for 6 yrs, after a
career as a college English professor and high school
English teacher. I have my PhD in English and my M.A.T. in
English Education (Cal certified) and have published
extensively on both literature and teaching.
My students consistently raise their scores on SAT
retakes, sometimes as high as 250-300 points. I work on all
aspects of the verbal test--critical reading, essay
writing, and grammar/usage/vocabulary skills. I offer
rigorous, kid-friendly test preparation, with much more
individual attention and greater expertise than you will
find elsewhere. I can offer many references from families I
have worked with in the e.Bay. Reasonable rates.

Writing expresses who you are:
Too often writing is taught very mechanistically-- Introduction, 3 body
paragraphs, and conclusion. I start from the other direction from the inside,
writing from experience and from how a student engages a subject. Then we
develop from there how to enhance their writing by researching facts, spelling
correctly, and constructing a nice flow and organization. This comes in
especially handy on college admission essays that require a student to
express who he or she ''really is.'' I have a Ph.D. in education along with 20
years of experience in academic tutoring and coaching,
educating teachers as a professor, and researching how
self-esteem affects learning. I have worked with many
different ages (elementary through college), learning styles, and cultural
backgrounds. Rate: 60 - 100/hr, negotiable.

Hello,

I'd like to offer my tutoring services in English and/or French reading and
writing. I'm ideally qualified to work with children in elementary or middle
school, as my previous tutoring experiences have been within after school
peer-to-peer tutoring programs, but I'm equally willing to take on the
challenge of tutoring high school students.

As for my personal information, I'm a Lebanese citizen fluent in French,
Arabic and English. I attended Amherst College in Amherst, MA where I
earned a B.A. in English Literature, and I'm currently a graduate student in
Music at Mills College. I live in the Rockridge area, and I'm free most
afternoons/evenings of the week and all day on weekends.

Please feel free to contact me with questions and requests for references.

Best,
Zeina

I am a senior English major at UC Berkeley and currently
work for CalCorps, UC Berkeleys public service center, as a
student director and literacy tutor for elementary and
middle school students.

My main areas of specialty are literacy, literature, and
writing . However, I am also qualified to tutor math
through Algebra 1, as well as all other subjects through
middle school.

Whether you have a child who is just learning to read or
are a high school or college student who needs help with a
paper, I can offer instruction based on multiple assessment
measures that I have found to work well for many different
kinds of learners. Along with my philosophy that teaching
must always first be learning, sessions favor a tailored
approach to each students needs rather than a generalized or
prescribed way of proceeding.

Please call or email me if you would like a copy of my
resume and references.

the SAT I and II. Most recently, I joined a selective cohort
of Bay Area teachers for the Bay Area Writing Project's
Summer Invitational, a five week program focused on writing
strategies.

have car, will travel within the Oakland/Piedmont/Berkeley area.

As a tutor of reading and writing, my qualifications are unique. A professional
writer for 20 years, I've written and created television dramas and films. I'm an
instructor at UCLA Writer's Program and have taught 16 classes-- subjects
such as discovering inspiration and writing an outline. My degree is in
psychology and my field work with adolescents/teens at risk. I'm the mother
of an 11-year old daughter with dyslexia and ADHD. We're a Montessori
family, which means ''follow the child'' and look for the teaching
opportunity. Kids like that I'm a ''real writer'' who can tell them ''cool stuff like
what it's like to write a movie for Usher.'' I work with kids who think they
can't do it or think writing is boring. My strength is developing self-esteem
and introducing the amazing world of ideas, self-expression and creativity. If
you want your child to find their passion for reading and writing, give them a
teacher who's passionate.
