Apr 09 2008 I am former kindergarten (5 yrs.), first grade teacher (2 yrs.), and literacy coach (4 yrs.) I am a trained Reading Recovery Teacher and I have a Masters in Reading/Reading Specialist Credential. I moved to the Bay Area 2 years ago in order to pursue my Ph.D. At that time, I began work as a Mentor for the New Teacher Center at UC Santa Cruz. I am currently taking time off from my graduate work in anticipation of heading back into the classroom (4th grade) this fall. Yeah! I am extremely patient and I have had amazing results with even difficult students. My expertise is in early reading and writing, but my classroom experience allows me to work with students from kindergarten through 5th grade in every content area. I have tons of classroom resources and supplies (including leveled texts) at my fingertips. I live in the Lake Merritt neighborhood of Oakland and I am available most afternoons. My unique approach to tutoring follows the model of an expert consultant. I don't only tutor the subject, I tutor the person, with great results. I begin with a thorough assessment of the student's learning style, motivation, life context, and personality, and then craft a student-specific and behavioral-specific curriculum and pedagogy that includes content mastery, study skills, and motivation.
