I'm a speech-language pathologist and have recently been trained in
the Reading with TLC approach to teaching phonics and phonemic
awareness. I'm also a former special ed teacher at the high school
level and have taught ESL to grade school kids.

I'd love to implement the Reading with TLC program this summer with
kids who are struggling to understand phonics and decoding. It's
designed for those ''emergency'' cases rather than kids who don't read
fluently yet, for example. If you're interested, please get in touch!

I'm a writing tutor with substantial experience teaching
middle, high-school and college students. I earned an
English BA from Oberlin (3.9 major GPA) and will be
starting on a PhD in English next year. I've worked for
education non-profits such as Making Waves, Aim High, and
826 Valencia. Areas of teaching expertise include:
writing for English and other disciplines, composing
admissions and application essays, and developing reading
skills. I also tutor the AP Lit, AP Lang/Comp, and SAT
Lit subject tests, as well as the SAT Critical Reading
and Writing sections.
I've worked with students from diverse communities and I
customize students' sessions depending on their
educational backgrounds. I'm a supportive tutor but I
encourage students to do all of the thinking themselves.
I can meet throughout the East Bay or San Francisco. I
charge competitive rates and offer a sliding scale based
on financial need. Resume and references available.

I want to also highly recommend Ilyse Gordis for reading
tutoring. She has been tutoring my son who is a 3rd grader.
She is very good at keeping him engaged. We started with
her a few years ago, but then found out my son had vision
issues. We took a break from tutoring to do vision therapy,
and now he is back with Ilyse. She has a sparkle that is
difficult to describe. She engages every child where they
are at in a way that gives them their dignity back. And my
son's reading is improving! Ilyse Gordis is in Berkeley and

Hello Parents,
I am an Oakland public school teacher with eight years of
experience teaching and tutoring in the Bay Area. I attended
Harvard for my BA and Mills for my MA. At my school site, I
create most of my own curriculum and have had particular
success with teaching active reading strategies and essay
and paragraph structure.
Currently, I teach 9th grade English, and while I can tutor
6th-12th grade, I especially enjoy working with rising 9th
graders. If your child is getting ready to enter high
school, I can help prepare them for the transition.

If your child struggles with reading or writing (or just
needs a little boost) I'm sure my patience, creative
curriculum, and proven strategies can help!

I am located in Oakland but can travel to nearby cities.
References available upon request. Rate is $50 per hour.

I am a former high school English teacher/Administrator hoping to
tutor English/Composition. My classroom experience includes
teaching literary analysis, writing and public speaking to students from
9th grade through 12th. Teaching is my passion, and my enthusiasm
for learning transfers to my students. I love the ''I get it'' look on a

I thoroughly enjoy teenagers, perhaps because I've never raised one, and I'm
very good at teaching them to write and/or to think intelligently about the
humanities. (When I taught writing and literature at UC Berkeley, I won ever
award available to instructors and lecturers.) If your tween, teen or undergrad
needs this sort of help, please don't hesitate to be in touch. I work with
students locally and by Skype. You are welcome to visit my website:
http://www.writemakesmightinstruction.com

BTW, I'm also a creative writing coach. Some very gifted and successful
writers have called me the BEST reader of their work. Well, only one did that
but still! If you'd like a second set of eyes on your work, I'd be delighted to
lend mine.

Writer coach and editor with years of I-Search experience
at Albany Middle School.

Could your eighth-grader use a hand with the I-Search?
AMS teachers contact me if a student needs support with
this long project. I've worked successfully with students
of all skill levels--basic, reluctant, proficient
(disorganized, perfectionist, procrastinating,
underestimating, overwhelmed, still-not-engaged...). I am
also bilingual (English/German) and understand the many,
often awkward or frustrating challenges that ELL students
face.

The hurdles and setbacks of any writing process can be
worked through together, as a team. Please contact me to
talk if you think I might be able to help.

print) with a masters in journalism from UC Berkeley, and experience teaching

suggestions, rather than editing for them. My focus is on process and analysis.

with all types of students. Please feel free to view my resume and work on my

My specialty is teaching students to become independent
readers and spellers. Using the Susan Barton Program which
presents systematic, direct instruction in phonemic
awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary and
spelling, my students become successful readers. Having
taught for thirty years in public and private schools,
having been credentialed in California, Massachusetts and
New York States, I am knowledgeable and well-organized. In
addition, the parents of the students I have tutored the
past eight years have found me to be kind and patient with

I recently graduated from a Berkeley M.A. program where I received a full-funded
fellowship. Before attending Berkeley, I triple majored in Sociology, Spanish &
Portuguese, and Latin American Studies, graduating summa cum laude. Over the
course of these last six years, I have had the honor to work with students
individually through one-on-one tutoring at the university tutoring center and as
a graduate student instructor. I also have successfully helped friends and clients
complete graduate, undergraduate, and professional school applications, getting
into Harvard, UC Berkeley, UNC, and several others. Beyond these qualifications, I
have learned five languages (going on my sixth), which has given me a keen
understanding of syntax, grammar, and organization. Depending on the
material, my rates are negotiable from thirty to fifty dollars. I look forward to
speaking with you.

Greetings,
My name is Kevin Arnold. I've been working as a teacher, academic
tutor, and homework coach throughout the thriving Berkeley
community for over 14 years.

Currently, I'm accepting new students who are seeking to improve their
writing and close reading skills, and learn how to manage their own
educations. Also, I help students with their college application essays,
and improve their SAT/ACT scores.

Over time, I've learned that effective tutoring is more than knowing a
subject - it's knowing how to connect with students and teach in a
relaxed and engaging way. I approach my students in a good-humored,
confident and knowledgeable manner. This approach allows them to
feel relaxed and focused, which truly allows them to learn a subject or
new skill. Please feel free to give me a call for a consultation, and to
explore my website for more information.

Best,
Kevin Arnold

Hello Parents,
I am an Oakland public school teacher with seven years of

If your child struggles with reading or writing (or just
needs a little boost) I?m sure my patience, creative
curriculum, and proven strategies can help!

I'm available most of the summer and am looking to take on
new clients for the school year.
I am located in Oakland but can travel to nearby cities.

Hi.

I have a PhD in Drama from Stanford, where I have subsequently worked as a

writing skills in many areas across the humanities. I currently work with a small
number of private clients in the Bay Area, from junior high through high school
seniors, to closely develop their reading and writing skills.

I can help your child develop expository, persuasive, and narrative writing,

on your needs, I can work primarily through guided writing exercises, or
discussion, or both.

I am also available to help guide your child through the college application
process, particularly focusing on crafting strong application essays.

Please contact me for rates and availability. I am available to work during the
summer and the school year.
