Dear Parents: I can offer your child the highest quality
professional tutoring, to develop critical reading
and writing skills, prep for the SAT test, or revise
college essays. I have tutored E.Bay high school students
for 10 yrs, after a career as a college English professor
and h.s English teacher. I have my PhD in English, my
M.A.T. in English Education (Cal certified), and have
published extensively on both literature and teaching.
My students consistently raise their English grades and
SAT scores (sometimes as high as 250-300 points). I work on
all English skills--critical reading, essay writing, and
grammar/usage/vocabulary skills. I offer rigorous, kid-
friendly test preparation, with more expertise and
individual attention than others can offer. Many references
available from families I have worked with. Reasonable
rates.

you about tutoring in reading and writing. I gradated from
UC Berkeley with honors this spring and from the Institute

supervisor on my attentive, stimulating and challenging
tutoring practices. I am also a trained peer tutor through

I'm an English, Writing and SAT Prep tutor with years of
experience tutoring students of all ages. I have a B.A. in
English from Columbia University (NYC) and an M.A. in
English from Holy Names University. I taught Literature,
Composition and Critical Thinking at Berkeley City College
for ten years before leaving to become a private tutor ten
years ago. I've worked for the College Board scoring the
essay portion of the new SAT. I enjoy working with many
types of students (as well as adults). I tutor at my home
in Castro Valley (right on the border of San Leandro and
Castro Valley), and charge $50 per hour. It takes about
twenty minutes to drive to my house from Oakland or
Berkeley, so I have had many students who lived in those
cities. Feel free to visit my website at www.wileyword.com.

Hello Parents,
I am an Oakland public school teacher with seven years of
experience teaching and tutoring in the Bay Area. I attended
Harvard for my BA and Mills for my MA. At my school site, I
create most of my own curriculum and have had particular
success with teaching active reading strategies and essay
and paragraph structure.
Currently, I teach 9th grade English, and while I can tutor
6th-12th grade, I especially enjoy working with rising 9th
graders. If your child is getting ready to enter high
school, I can help prepare them for the transition.

If your child struggles with reading or writing (or just
needs a little boost) I?m sure my patience, creative
curriculum, and proven strategies can help!

I'm available most of the summer and am looking to take on
new clients for the school year.
I am located in Oakland but can travel to nearby cities.
References available upon request. Rate is $50 per hour.

Hi.

I have a PhD in Drama from Stanford, where I have subsequently worked as a
teaching fellow in the humanities, helping freshmen to develop their reading and
writing skills in many areas across the humanities. I currently work with a small
number of private clients in the Bay Area, from junior high through high school
seniors, to closely develop their reading and writing skills.

I can help your child develop expository, persuasive, and narrative writing,
and/or deepen critical understandings of literature and written texts. Depending
on your needs, I can work primarily through guided writing exercises, or
discussion, or both.

I am also available to help guide your child through the college application
process, particularly focusing on crafting strong application essays.

Please contact me for rates and availability. I am available to work during the
summer and the school year.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for
a lifetime.
My aim in tutoring is to impart a set of skills and guiding questions to aspiring
writers, so they can become confident and skilled writers in their own right.
Rather than just proof reading, I lead aspiring writers through the process of
brainstorming, structuring ideas into logical arguments and fine-tuning their
own voice, all while considering their audience.
I have a BA in English from Occidental College and an MSc in Communications
from the London School of Economics. In both settings, I worked as a peer-
writing advisor and conducted one-on-one counseling sessions with
undergraduate and masters students on their academic papers and
dissertations.
I am patient, can work with all ages, ask targeted questions and enjoy watching
writers gain the sense of accomplishment that comes with each completed
essay.

I teach children to read. I rely primarily on the Reading
Revolution method, a multi-sensory approach that includes
both phonics and comprehension components. The students
learn through games and reading controlled text and good
books in a warm, supportive environment. My goal is to
help each student achieve success as a reader and enoy
reading.

I have a teaching credential and over 9 years of
experience teaching reading as a private tutor.

My tutoring space is in Berkeley, near Ashby and Telegraph
Avenues.

A satisfied parent had this to say: ''Nancy uses her
expertise, creativity, patience, compassion, and fun
kinesthetic activities to help my son experience success
in reading. He's gone from a non-reader to reading by

way. I approach my students in a good-humored, confident and knowledgeable

Berkeley) my students learned to craft a powerful thesis and to structure an
essay that flows from this thesis. So, I bring a lot of experience and
sensitivity to my tutoring. Whether I'm tutoring an 8th grade student or an
employee on the job, I tailor my tutoring to the personality and distinct needs
of each student.
For every tutoring hour, I spend at least an hour preparing. I aim to engage
the student and to elicit deeper thinking about literature and writing. I teach
students to discover and express their ideas in language that is effective and
powerful, but all their own
I have successfully tutored students at Piedmont Middle School, Head Royce,
Bentley and Berkeley High.

Hello Parents,

I am offering my services as a tutor. A recent transplant to
the Bay Area, I graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree
in Art and minors in Physics and Astrophysics with academic
honors. I have been teaching in the classroom and as a
tutor for the past 10 years, both in the US and abroad. I
have a comprehensive understanding of learning theory, and
know how to teach to an individual's particular learning
style.

My aim in tutoring is to give an individual the tools to
complete assignments while also imparting an understanding
of the underlying principals the assignment relies upon. In
this way the student is able to both conceptualize the
theories behind an idea and concretely demonstrate his or
her understanding.

I am happy to help students in any of the disciplines of
mathematics, physics, astrophysics, writing, etc.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Reading Fluency and Comprehension Tutoring

I use highly effective methods that produce dramatic
improvements. You will notice it after only a few sessions.

Before starting, I conduct an assessment. I assess fluency
and comprehension as well as strengths and weaknesses and
any possible learning issues. I put the findings in a 2-3
page report that serves me as a guide in creating a
tutoring plan conducive to student?s specific needs.

The tutoring sessions are composed of several sections with
more focus on those areas that are lacking the most. For
example, if the student reads with low fluency more
emphasis is placed on bringing the fluency up, and as the
fluency improves, more emphasis is given to comprehension.

During each session, I find ways of boosting their self-
confidence which helps them become confident readers.

I also do six week reading intervention for first and
second graders. My tutoring rate is $50 per session.

I am a poet and teacher looking to support my writing habit. I received my BA
in English from Pomona College and my MFA in Poetry from Brown University.
I have been tutoring since I was in high school and have been a writing
instructor for high school students (at Northwestern University). I am also an
application reader for QuestBridge (a prestigious college scholarship), so I
have experience with college application essays.

My students often come to reading and writing with resistance (''it's too hard'';
''it's boring''), and I have a special knack for leading them into the joys of
language. A parent once told me that her daughter had always hated writing,
but after my summer writing class she wanted to take creative writing classes
during the school year.

I feel comfortable tutoring all ages, but I have especially good rapport with
teenagers.

Please contact me by email if you are interested in my services.

Thanks!
