Graduating High School Senior Looking for Summer Tutoring
Work in East Bay
Hi! I am a high school senior looking for some tutoring
work before I start college in San Francisco in Fall 2013.
I am currently attending boarding school in Utah, but was
born in Oakland and raised in Berkeley. I will be living
in Berkeley from mid-July to late August, at which point I
will move to San Francisco.
About my academic capabilities: I have a cumulative GPA of
3.2; throughout my senior year I have maintained straight
A's. I read and write for fun as well as writing strong
essays for Honors/AP English classes. I am interested in
tutoring because I believe everyone can love reading and
writing; it just takes the right teacher sometimes. I want
to help your child on a peer-to-peer basis, as a teenager
myself. I also have a special interest in helping those
coping with mental illness. Please contact me at the email
above and I will reply asap. Thanks for reading!

I am a Harvard graduate, with a degree in English
literature. I have taught both internationally and
domestically and currently work as a writer in Berkeley. My
passions of reading and writing both emit from my experience
of literature as a way of making meaningful connections.
Each of these passions requires a commitment to total
mastery of the basics of writing and also to using writing
as an effective means of powerful communication. I work with
students on mastering the techniques for reading (fiction
and non-fiction) and writing (creative, analytical, and
persuasive) that prepare them to succeed in an academically
rigorous university, as well as connecting with the
different forms they are learning.
My approach is compassionate and focused. I have taught and
tutored those from 1st grade to 12th grade, have read dozens
of college essays, and have worked with students of multiple
language backgrounds.

I have only one spot left for Jan 2013!
I love the kids who need the most help. I am an
experienced, credentialed teacher, taking a break from the
classroom. I have succeeded with children where often others
have not been able to, and have successfully reached the
''difficult'' children, or the children who have different
learning styles, as well as the children who do well in
academic settings. I have helped children and teenagers who
absolutely hate school! I can provide testimonials from
other parents.
I'm happy to email you my resume and a description of my
services if you'd like. I will say up front that I charge
more than some tutors but I am a trained, credentialed
teacher and can be more helpful in less time than many. The
best compliment I have ever gotten from a parent was that
the change in her son was ''miraculous.'' That's why I do it!
email better than phone for contacting me.

I teach systematic phonics instruction, and am very passionate about teaching
reading skills. With the methodology I use I have watched students jump two
grade levels in reading within 6 months of instruction. I teach students skills
to decode words using phonics, along with the most common sight words in
the English language. To improve fluency and reading comprehension, I
incorporate texts that are both engaging and challenging for students into the
lessons. I love what I do, and enjoy instilling in my students a passion for
reading. I live in Berkeley and am willing to tutor in the East Bay area.

Tutor seeking to help kids find their highest potential!
Before moving to the Bay Area this August to pursue my graduate studies in
Berkeley, I served as a middle and high school teacher at an independent
college preparatory school. As a class dean and student advisor I worked with
students and their families to create habits and skills that were individual and
comprehensive. My focus is the big picture and your student's unique gifts and
challenges. I strive to spark intellectual curiosity and help students develop the
tools they need to be successful long term. It is a student-centered approach
that empowers kids to take ownership of, and holds them accountable for, their
own learning. I also have experience and training working with ELL students.
My rates are flexible (needs-based). I live on the peninsula and commute
regularly to Berkeley.
I'm very excited to have this opportunity to work one-on-one with your student!
Warmly,

provide the feedback to help writers express their ideas clearly in well-
structured essays.
When it comes to homework, I can help students to better understand the

Hello,
I am an experienced high school English teacher and tutor and hold a B.A. from
Smith College and an M.A. in English Literature from Mills College.
A bit about my tutoring style:
*Process: I believe that writing is a process and I work with my students to show
them the importance of every step.
*Macro to Micro: When working with students, I like to prioritize skill sets.
*Student-Centered: I believe students learn more effectively when they?re
actually interested in the subject matter or in what they have to say. For this
reason, I always strive to create relevance and to help students relate to the
texts they?re reading.
*Skill sets: Rather than approach each piece of writing as a unique task, I focus
on skills and teach them so that they will be useful for any future assignments.
Please contact me if you have a high-school-aged son or daughter looking for
help in writing or reading. (I will provide my resume and/or references upon
request.)

SAT scores (sometimes as high as 250-300 points). I work on
all English skills--critical reading, essay writing, and
grammar/usage/vocabulary skills. I offer rigorous, kid-
friendly test preparation, with much more individual
attention and greater expertise than you will find
elsewhere. I have many references from families I have
worked with in the e.Bay. Reasonable rates.

K-6 Reading Tutor
I teach systematic phonics instruction, and am very passionate about teaching
reading skills. With my lessons I have watched students jump two grade levels
in reading within 6 months of instruction. I teach students skills to decode
words using phonics, along with the most common sight words in the English
language. To improve fluency and reading comprehension, I incorporate texts
that are both engaging and challenging for students into the lessons. I love
what I do, and enjoy instilling in my students a passion for reading. I live in
Berkeley and am willing to tutor in the East Bay area.

Hello, if you or your student is anxious about writing, I
can help!
I have a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in English literature as
well as a high school teaching credential and many years of
teaching experience. Currently, I teach writing and
literature at Cal State East Bay and UC Berkeley (The Fall
Program for Freshman). I have worked
successfully with many non-native English speakers and have
tutored at both the high school and the college levels.
Students and faculty at both universities where I teach have
rated me 'highly recommended' in evaluations that I can make
available to you.
Students are responsive to my teaching, often praising me
for my patience and kindness. Many have thanked me for
noticing improvements more than mistakes and for helping
them to believe in their abilities.
I can work with you on completing five-paragraph essays,
literary analysis papers, research papers, college admission
essays, cover letters--and more!

Most universities require students to take a composition
course during their freshmen year. I have been teaching such
classes at UC Berkeley since 2007, and I know that many high
school students are not prepared for college-level writing.
They struggle to formulate arguments and express their
positions in clear sentences, paragraphs, and essays. If
your child needs to develop these skills, then I can help.
Sessions are $35/hour and can be scheduled at a time that is
convenient for you. For more information, please feel free
to contact me at tracylynnfritz@gmail.com.

Hello,
My name is David Rice. I graduated from Harvard College in 2010,
having studied English, medieval studies, religion, and German
language and literature. After spending last year in Berlin on a novel-
writing fellowship, I worked last year as a teaching assistant in a studio
animation course at Harvard.
I am in San Francisco now and will be here through the summer (June,
July, and August). I can tutor ages 10+ in any aspects of reading and
writing, including college application advice, support, and editing. I can
work with individual students or small groups. I can also work with
students to put together a reading list on a subject or author(s) that
they are interested in, and conduct a reading group with regular
meetings and optional writing assignments with constructive feedback.
Please let me know if you're interested in discussing any of this further!
Thanks,
David.

About me:
I am a UC Berkeley graduate. As a course reader in the department of South
and Southeast Asian studies, I always took extra time to give feedback to the
students about their research papers and essay questions on exams. My role
as a grader has attuned me to the standards for college level writing as well
as common difficulties in forming a solid argument and cohesive paper. My
background is well-suited to students who are at at a college-prep or college
level. In addition to tutoring writing, I can also tutor students in critical
reading and research methods.
My philosophy:
As a student I often found that teaching was one of the best ways to learn, so
I view tutoring as an opportunity for growth in both the tutor and the student.

I teach children to read. I work mostly with students in
grades 1-5, but I also teach older students who are reading
at extremely low grade levels. I rely primarily on the
Reading Revolution method, a multi-sensory approach that
includes both phonics and comprehension components. The
students learn through games and reading controlled text and
good books in a warm, supportive environment. My goal is to
help each student achieve success as a reader and enjoy reading.
I have a teaching credential and over 7 years of experience
teaching reading as a private tutor.
My tutoring space is in Berkeley, near Ashby and Telegraph Aves.
A satisfied parent had this to say: ''Nancy uses her
expertise, creativity, patience, compassion, and fun
kinesthetic activities to help my son experience success in
reading. He's gone from a non-reader to reading by
flashlight under the covers.''
