I have been tutoring ESL students for five years and I have worked with people from many countries including Mongolia, Argentina, Germany, Poland, and Korea. I tutor children as well as adults. Before moving to the Bay Area this August to pursue my graduate studies in Berkeley, I served as a middle and high school teacher at an independent college preparatory school. I have experience and training working with ELL students, especially with issues of difficult subject matter based on the cultural context of the student in relation to the coursework. If your student is having trouble understanding what class is actually about, the issue may be only partially language. Overcoming this takes effort from your student, but also a teacher who can give your student the background and cultural insight that will help them.
