Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (April 2000)
Re: good therapist for teens: David Akullian, North Berkeley, Shattuck
at Cedar Street, 848-4203. Worked well with both my 11 year-old son
and 15 year-old daughter.

very sex positive therapist. www.askisadora.com

Re: Therapist to help us heal after Infidelity (March 2005)
Please try Gail Alter in Berkeley. Her number is 510/433-
2972. We saw her for several years, and she was patient,
nurturing and validating. This must be a tough time for you,
and I applaud you for wanting to make your marriage work.
Gail helped us through some difficult times - I hope she is
able to help you as well.
Re: Therapist for teenage girl (Aug 2004)
I can highly recommend Gail Alter as a therapist for teenage girls
and for their parents.
Phone is 510-433-2972
Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (June 1999)
Gail Alter, LCSW may also work with boys, but I recommend her for
girls:
433-2972
So much depends on the fit, but all are reputable and come with good
recommendations.
Re: Male therapist for shy 17-y-o son (March 2005)
For the parent seeking a hip therapist who can connect
with teens, I'd like to suggest Dr. Greg Alter. I
appreciate Greg's approach with teens so much, I asked him
to become the therapist for the Haven Learning Center.
Greg works with teenagers out of our new space -- the Mind
Body PlayLab -- located at the New Age Academy on Adeline
near Ashby. He also sees people at his home office in Pt.
Richmond. You can reach him at 510.307.4321.

Re: Mother suffering from bulimia (July 2001)
Preston Parsons, LCSW. She is located in Rockridge. Good luck. Sara
Re: Eating disorder (2001)
Preston Parsons Alvarez was
someone who was recommended to us by my daughter's adolescent medicine doctor at
Kaiser, Dr. Tipton. Preston is not a Kaiser provider -- she is
private and this is costly. We decided we had more confidence in the
private sector than Kaiser Permanente when it came to psychological
help. I interviewed 5 therapists, including Preston, over the phone
in lengthy conversations and then presented the results to my
daughter. Ultimately, it was my daughter's decision. My daughter feels as good about
Preston now as she did 5 years ago. Preston worked for many years in
the in-patient units for eating disorder teens back in the days when
they were subsidized by the government. She worked well with my
daughter, and also consulted well with the psychiatrist who treated my
daughter when she became an in-patient through Kaiser.
Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (June 1999)
My 17-year-old daughter has been seeing a wonderful therapist named
Preston Parsons Alvarez (College Avenue/Oakland). She has seen her
for 9 months and the whole family is very impressed with her -- we
have all been in for visits with our daughter for family history
reasons, but my daughter is her patient. Preston is very clear about
patient confidentiality and has kept our daughter's trust accordingly.
My daughter also attends a peer group (teenage girls) that is attended
by a facilitator who interns with Preston, and she is very happy with
the group as well. I have had much experience with therapists of all
license/education backgrounds, and am very critical of the whole thing
-- I think Preston is very good at what she does. She is also very
kind and supportive. Very skilled. Good luck.
Re: African American therapist for teen
I would recommend Stephen Anderson--he's
an intern (post master's, working towards his license) under good
supervision. You can reach him at 893-2001 (x6). He was a student of mine,
and an intern of a friend/colleague. He's worked with kids and adolescents.

Re: Couples Counseling
As for couples therapists I want to recommend Sarah
Ashton. Her number is 433-7984 and is located next to Oliveto's on
College Ave. in Oakland. I know her because I am also a
psychotherapist (I'd recommend myself except I guess that would be a
conflict of interests). I highly respect her as a therapist. She is
very smart, very compassionate but not squishy.

Re: Therapist for reckless & destructive 13-year-old (Sept. 2003)
Peter August MFT is a gentle, caring, intelligent,
forthright, honest, compassionate therapist. He has
helped my daughter (now 13) navigate the difficult
territory from her anorexia (which surfaced during the
aftermath of a divorce) to a state of recovery where she
expresses her feelings, and preferences like any other
persistently annoyed young teen.
One very important piece of information about the work
Peter has done/is doing with my daughter is that he
has created and maintains a sense of safety where any
combination of parents/ex's/step-parents feel safe
enough to walk into a room together to discuss the
things we can't work out alone. Somehow this great
guy can support each of us, simultaneously, until we
get through whatever we can/must to continue the
important work of helping the child survive and grow.
Peter's office is on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland and
his # is 510-654-4282.

Re: Therapist for painful intercourse (Aug 2003)
Toni Ayres is a sex therapist in SF (or close by). She taught
a sexuality course that I took to get my counseling degree

nursing degree--so she understands the physiology behind
what is going on. I would also encourage you to look up Dr.

Re: Sex issues therapist - Walnut Creek (Feb 2004)
I know of an amazing therapist in Concord who I strongly
recommend (I assume you want a female)? She's not necessarily a
sex therapist, but she's just amazing at dealing with
relationships (with self and others) and is an incredible woman.
Her name is Stephanie Baer-Spoden and she's an LCSW. Her office
number is: 925-890-1208. I'm a therapist myself and she's been a
colleague for years. Her integrity, humor and instincts are just
exceptional. I've never sent anyone to her who wasn't very
pleased. Good luck!

Re: Hypnotherapist for nail biting (July 2003)
I highly recommend David Barron as a hypnotherapist. He is
amazing and gets excellent results in many areas -- habits, long-
held belief systems which are causing problems, personal growth,
competence. I have several friends who also see him now too, so
he is willing to come up for regular sessions with us. He is in
San Jose and will either see clients there, or comes up here for
sessions occasionally. His phone number is (408) 885-1855, and
his e-mail address is dr.barron at changework.com.

Re: Hypnotherapist for working on behavior modifications (Feb 2003)
I highly recommend David Barron as a hypnotherapist. I have

get amazing results. His office is in San Jose, but he is
willing to come to this area for appointments. His phone is

Re: Couples Therapist in San Francisco (June 2003)
We have a really fantastic couples counselor whom I've already
recommended to several friends (after several friends recommended
him to *us*!) and now we're all seeing him and everyone seems to
think he's just terrific. Michael Baugh, LCSW LC 9324, Clinical
Director, New Perspectives Center for Counseling, 650-756-1758.
He has two offices where he sees patients, one out on Geary Blvd.
and another down south (past Krispy Kreme). He's given us a safe
place to sort out hot issues, and tools to argue and talk better,
plus he has some background in child development and has
interesting input about child-rearing issues. I can't say enough
good stuff about the guy, we think he's just great (and so far,
so does everyone else we've sent his way!).

Re: Therapist for lesbian couple with kids (2001)
My partner & I saw a couples therapist we both couldn't recommend more
highly. We've
both actually gone back to see her individually after seeing her together
on & off for about
3 years. She is in SF, which is a bummer for us since we're now in East
Bay, but it has still
been worth it to remain with her. Zoe Becker 415/586-5627. She's in Glen Park

Re: Therapist recommendations: I recommend my aunt Sandy Bemesderfer, PhD,

great to have as an aunt!
Re: Counselor/therapist for 13-year-old (Aug 2002)
Therapist for teen -- Dr. Kenneth Benau, on Telegraph Ave., Berkeley (510) 704-0116.
He is excellent with teens as well as with families.

Re: Therapist for anxiety and depression (Dec 2004)
I saw a therapist for group counseling for women who struggled
with depression and I really liked her. I'm not sure if she's
still doing groups, but I would go to her for individual
therapy as well. She used to practice some in Berkeley but I
believe she now only works out of her Hayward office. I think
it would be worth the drive. Her name is Fran Bennett and her
number is (510) 888-2415.
Re: Postpartum depression March 2000
Call Shoshana Bennett, with Postpartum Support for Mothers at 727-4610
Hutcheson-Wilcox Family
Re: New mom with old baggage to sort through (July 1999)
Shoshanna Bennett in Castro Valley is a very good therapist who specializes
in pregnancy and postpartum issues. I saw her during my pregnancy
privately and also went to a post-partum depression group - while I was
pregnant. Both were very helpful. I'm sorry I don't have the number but
I'm sure she is listed.
Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (April 2000)
It mattered a lot for our teen to like and feel accepted by a
therapist--even more important than for an adult--because acceptance is the
stuff of teen identity. It was also important for our teen to build a
trusting relationship with an adult, and bridge the generations for a source
of advice in addition to peers. From this experience, I would suggest
interviewing several therapists to find the right fit, and not be afraid to
change the therapist if that right fit, for whatever reason, isn't there. I
can recommend , for one, Dr. Anna Berger, who is warm, savvy, and wise.
848-3050.
Re: Marriage Counselors (Aug 2005)
I am familiar with both Jodie Berke and Gayle Peterson. Both
are highly qualified, nurturing therapists, who have been
working with individuals and couples for many years.
Jodie Berke, I saw individually, but think she would
also make an excellent couples counselor.

I recommend Dr. Elea Bernou. She does very thorough child
assessments, including neuropsych, cognitive, learning, and
psychological issues. She is also great with kids and thoughtful
in her recommendations and feedback. If money is an issue she
supervises some interns who do assessments at a lower fee. phone

Re: Weighing adoption vs. donor eggs (July 2003)
I highly recommend Anne Bernstein who helped us with a similar
decision. Phone: 549-0598. Office: 2955 Shattuck near Ashby. She is
an incredibly skilled therapist with a great deal of experience working
with people on ''family-building choices'' and how children deal with
having ''unusual origins.''
Re: Therapist for teenage girl (Aug 2004)
I can't say enough good things about my daughter's
therapist, Yvonne Beyer. She is warm, funny, relaxed,
straight forward, and very practical. She has two grown
daughter's of her own (she told me when I asked-many
therapists don't). She is open to talking with me
anytime, and has really been there for my daughter in
crisis times. And she takes my insurance, Pacificare.
My daughter feels very comfortable with her and comes
out from her session a relaxed and happy kid (even at
13!!). Yvonne is in Oakland and her number is
601-0132.

think she's in the same situation---that she's not
accepting any new MHN clients.

Re: Couples Counseling
My husband and I have a wonderful couple counselor to recommend. We have
been seeing Judith Cohen, LCSW, for 2 years and she is one of the most
impressive therapists I have ever met. I mention this here because she is
building her practice and it occurred to me that someone (family, couples)
might be grateful for the recommendation! Judith is warm, intuitive,
empathic and generally a life saver. She charges $95 an hour but reduces
her fee for those in need. Her offices are near the corner of San Pablo &
Marin in Albany and she can be reached at 510-527-3132.

Re: New mom with old baggage to sort through (July 1999)
Joan Bonnar, Ph.D., is a fabulous therapist. I have seen her alone and
with my husband for the very issues you describe. She is warm,
intuitive but also intellectual. She has a great analysis of how hard
it is to be a woman in our culture but rather than spend time raging
against the machine she focusses on how to handle it in a healthy
fashion. When she does couples counselling she is scrupulously fair to
both partners, even though she has a long-term relationship with me.
Not too mushy, so my husband is comfortable with her.
Re: EFT Couples Therapist (June 2003)

Re: Helping couple through divorce (2001)
Your situation sounds similar to what I went through two years ago.
Although we were not married, a five year relationship was coming to an
end with a two year old child involved. I wanted to leave and he wanted
me to stay. Unfortunately the relationship had reached a point where I
felt that me leaving was the only feasible possibility. I did agree to
go to a counselor, however, who simply told my "x" that she could not
tell me to stay if leaving is what I wanted. She did, however, help us
get through some of the emotions and help each of understand why the
relationship was coming to an end. I also learned quite a bit about how
we project our emotions onto to others. That remains to be helpful to me.
The number one reason that I recommend this counselor (listed below) so
highly is because she was straightforward with us. She was not looking
for repeat business, but simply told us that if we chose to get back
together than she would work with us at that time. Otherwise, she was
not looking to have someone stay in a relationship just for the sake of
the child. And especially, for the well being of the child if there is
continual arguing and unhappiness in the home.
I wish you well. I know that it is a really hard situation to be going
through.

Re: Mediation for mom and 14-y-o in turmoil? (May 2004)
Regarding thirteen-year-old with problems: We recommend
Dr. Kristen Carey at 587-3260. She saw our thirteen-year-
old for six months of wonderful meetings. Our daughter would
come home, full of new confidence and enthusiasm, where
before, she'd felt disconnected and somewhat frightened of
growing up. Our family has grown as a result of Dr.
Carey's intuitive and caring approach. Our daughter is now
speaking up for herself at school and at home; she's
looking forward to eighth grade and a summer full of new
experiences.
Re: Down-to-earth Couples Counselor near Campus (Feb 2003)

(Licensed Clinical Social Worker) on Piedmont Ave. in Oakland named
Thana Christian. Although I have seen her alone, I know she has a lot of

of greater assistance to you at such a sad time. I would be happy to
give a more in-depth referral if you e-mail me, or just call Thana

Re: Kaiser Therapists for an Adult (June 2003)
I love my therapist at Kaiser San Francisco, Christine Chu. She
is very compassionate, a good listener, and turns the focus to my
strengths while not dismissing the validity of my difficulties.
She does not put things into a diagnostic format which I like-
labeling disorders always makes me feel flawed. She is not
overtly feminist in her approach, but she is so intrinsicaly.
I see her on a long-term basis which Kaiser gives me because of a
chronic condition. Kaiser Oakland had told me that only
short-term was available. But I only get to see her every 5-6
weeks, which of course makes it very different than the intensity
of private (expensive) therapy.
I am considering switching to Kaiser San Rafael for my therapy
because it is faster for me to get to than San Francisco. But I
hate to leave Christine!

a premarital counselor, Ruth Cohn, in Rockridge who we really
liked. I too had a reluctant fiance who initially didn't really
see why this was a good thing to do but thankfully, he ended up
liking Ruth (she wasn't too touchy feely for him). One of the
most helpful things she did for us was providing a framework
for helping us stop and truly listen (and get!) what the other
person was trying to say. That might sound too simplistic but
it's amazing how that part can be the primary source of
misunderstanding! Her number is 510/653-6256.

Re: Family therapist (1999)
There are two really great therapists on Solano Blvd. in Albany who are
good with family issues.
The other therapist is Andrew Condey,
Ph.D.. He is also very good, but I don't believe that he is on the
Pacificare list yet.
Re: Therapist for lesbian couple with kids (2001)
I highly recommend both Marsha Hiller 644-2724 and Patricia Contaxis
524-5028. They are both MFT's and have extensive experience working with
couples and doing child therapy. They are excellent clinically and have
impeccable ethics. Sara
Re: Woman psychotherapist near Montclair (Nov 2002)
Elaine Cooper, PhD (540-6555) seems like a good therapist for
what you mentioned. She's practical and gives feedback and
ideas, rather than simply alot of empathic listening (at least
in my case). She works mostly in SF, but on Thursdays works in
the office building in the Italian Colors complex.

Re: Therapist to build 5-year-old's social skills (March 2003)

Hope Dean, LCSW on Carelton St. in Berkeley at 510-649-1144
Linda Cozzarelli, LCSW on College in Oakland at 510-428-9050
They are both seasoned therapists who specialize in working with children
and (it's almost a given!) do play therapy. Good luck!

I would like to recommend Eileen Crean, MFT. We are currently
seeing her right now for marriage counseling and we both like
her! She accepts UCB's PacifiCare insurance. She is in Berkeley

Re: Therapist to help us heal after Infidelity (March 2005)
My husband and I went to see Dr. Bruce Cribley in Oakland, off
of Grand Ave. I don't know that this is his area of expertese
(sp?) but my husband had been unfaithful before we got married
and Bruce helped us work through it. We've been very happy now
for 2 and a 1/2 years. If you're interested his number is 510-
530-4112. Good luck.
Re: Therapist who accepts Medi-Cal and/or Medicare (Jan 2003)
Christopher Cunningham, MS is an excellent counselor in SF. He
has an office downtown near Montgomery BART and another in West
Portal. I know he uses a sliding pay scale, but I am not sure
whether or not he accepts Medicare/Medi-Cal. He can be reached
at 415/661-5667.
Re: Couples Therapist in Montclair (July 2002)
We have been very happy with Marjorie Cusick, MFT. She is warm
and straightforward, communicative and both of us felt heard and
understood by her. Her office is not in Montclair but pretty
close...on College and Alcatraz. She may also have a second
office. She can be reached at 510.428.2309.
Re: Affordable marriage counselor (Oct 2001)
After consultation with my husband, I am writing again to offer the
possibility of your consulting directly with my husband and myself.
My husband and I also do personal and relationship coaching (we are
NOT therapists). Normally we charge more than $80 a session (since
we work as a team, and usually do 2-hour sessions twice a month).
But we are willing to negotiate if you are interested (we also take
some trade). We utilize a mix of styles and approaches, which we
try to tailor to your needs. You can find out a little more about
our work at http://www.weirdness.org/coaching/index.html.
If you can't read our page, or you just want further information,
please call us at 510-562-6417. I'd also be happy to give you a
reference to one of our "graduates" if you want another opinion as
to the value of our work. At present, sessions are usually conducted
in our home in San Leandro (within walking distance of the Oakland
border), on weekday evenings. Feel free to e-mail us for more info
(coaching AT weirdness DOT org), or call 510-562-6417.

Re: Eating disorder (2001)
While my daughter was being treated for an eating disorder,
her therapist recommended an excellent family therapist who we all went to together
alongside her therapy with my daughter, named Dr. DiMartini.
Re: angry adolescent
Dear Parent: I have two daughters, both of whom have experienced anger and
depression resulting from divorce, etc. My older daughter is in therapy
with a fantastic clinical psychologist who, in turn, recommended a
wonderful family therapist who specializes in individual and group/family
therapy. His name is John DiMartini, located just off College Avenue in
Oakland near the BART. I don't have his phone number with me at the
moment, but if you are interested in pursuing this, please feel free to
e-mail me. The reason I like him so much is that he absolutely protects
the rights of children while helping every member of the family to feel
whatever is going on for them and he is extremely fair. He is excellent at
enabling everyone involved to listen to everyone else -- quite a remarkable
task. He is also open to suggestions if something goes off, and I think
this is critical to any group situation. I don't know if he would see an
individual and that individual's family at the same time -- usually
therapists just do one or the other. However, I am confident that he could
recommend someone else if you eventually felt the need for individual and
family therapy. Obviously, since both of my children are female, I don't
know first-hand about how John would do with a male child. However, I
would guess he would be wonderful with your son and/or you and your
husband. Good luck. Just this past weekend I was at Emerson School's
playground with my younger daughter who was playing basketball, and we
witnessed a 5-year-old boy who was screaming, hitting and biting his mother
and sister -- his parents were also nearing the point of a therapist. My
thoughts are with you. Take care, Tamara

Re: Therapist for Preschooler (Feb 2003)
My therapist, Dr. Margaret Dodson, on Solano Ave., often sees
children. I haven't taken my child to her, but she has such a
kind, gentle manner and a great sense of humor, that it seems
like it would be worth checking her out. Her number is 510/526-0474.

Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (June 1999)
In response to the request for Teen Counselors
I personally recommend:
Jan Dombrower,M.S.
Liscensed Marriage, Family & Child Counselor
1345 "B" Street
Hayward, CA 94541
510/537-8630
I'm not sure where you are located, which is a concern, because if its too
far to travel then you tend to not go, so get someone close to your home.
I took my daughter to Jan for almost two years and the results were great.
My daughter was a victim of a crime and so the state paid for our
counseling (mine too!) so I don't know how much it runs. She is excellent
with kids and is more than willing to give references for someone in your area.
Re: Therapist for depression (July 2001)
Concerning treatment of depression. I strongly recommend Susan Drager. She
is a LCSW but has connections with excellent psychiatrists if medication is
in order. I have recommended her to a friend for her daughter and they
are very satisfied. She sees patients at offices in Oakland or Walnut
Creek. Her phone is 510 763 1502.

I have been working with Bonnie Weiss as my coach/therapist for
over a year and a half and think she is super. While I do not
have direct experience with her and Jay as a couples therapist,
we have certainly covered a number of relationship issues. I
think her background in gestalt therapy, coaching, and more
recently family sytems theories would make her an excellent
choice for a couples therapist. I also think Jay is highly
qualified.

Re: Affordable marriage counselor (Oct 2001)
My husband and I have seen someone recently who might work for you.
His name is Bruce Ecker. He does something fairly unusual (he
literally wrote the book on it!) called "Depth Oriented Brief Therapy".
The hallmark of this technique is that he believes that deep, long-lasting
change is potentially available FROM THE VERY FIRST VISIT. He will
see individuals or couples (so far we've always gone together, although
some visits were more like individual therapy with kibbitzing), and he
will schedule sessions at whatever interval you feel comfortable with.
Each session is scheduled at the end of the current one, so you're in
no way "committed" to see him for any set period of time. The downside
is that it can mean inconsistent timing of visits, since it will depend
on whatever he has open at that point. But we've never had any problem
finding a mutually acceptable time within about 2 or 2 1/2 weeks. He
has a sliding scale, and I believe that the bottom is $80. He is not
solely a marriage counselor, but he certainly does work on dynamics
between couples, very effectively (he is both an MA and MFCC). He
works in Oakland, at 445 Bellevue Ave. Suite 101. Phone number:
510-452-2820.
Good luck!

Re: CBT Therapist for anxiety disorders (Jan 2005)
I am delighted to recommend my colleague, Deborah Efron, LCSW.
She is an expert CBT Therapist with a very strong background in
the treatment of anxiety. Her office is in Berkeley on upper

Re: Post-partum Issues Couples Therapist (Sept 2004)
I would recommend Carl Eggers, MFT for couples counseling. He
has a website at www.lovingrelationships.com that describes his
approach, including some out of the (sand) box ways of helping
people begin to express themselves when words fail. He's in the
North Bay, but I believe he also sees clients in the East Bay.
Re: Preschooler who may have Oppositional Defiant Disorder (Sept 2002)
Diane Ehrensaft (near Childrens Fairyland in Oakland) is
excellent with young boys. We were reluctant to take our son to
therapy when he was 7 years old. But he was miserable, angry,
and a roller coaster of emotions with no apparent source.
School and knowledgeable parents all separately recommended
Diane. She was and is wonderful. Diane was not quick to
diagnose, did not assume it was environmental (it was not), and
was not quick to recommend medication. She has been invaluable
in the parent conferences and with our son's school. She also
is practical and a straight shooter, and genuinely cares about
our son. He still sees her at age 10,and we feel extremely
lucky to have her in his life.
Diane is usually booked up, but if you're flexible you could get
lucky. Her number is 547-4147.
Re: Therapist for college-aged daughter (March 2002)
Ruth Fallenbaum had been recommended to me by a colleague
who was really happy with the work that he had done with her.
I interviewed her and liked her quite a bit, but she didn't
have room in her schedule at the time. This seems to change
over time, so I would definitely talk to her. She seems quite
bright and compassionate, and was willing to offer referrals
which I thought was really helpful.
Re: Therapist for college-aged daughter (March 2002)
I can whole-heartedly recommend Ruth Fallenbaum.
(Unfortunately, she is not taking any new HealthNet/MHN
clients.) Ruth is very professional and non-judgmental.
She has a down to earth style that has allowed me to
work to my own solutions with the advantage of her skills,
perspective and insights. I don't have a lot of experience
with therapists but the difference between a negative
experience with one (on the MHN list but not on your
list)and Ruth Fallenbaum has been like night and day.
Ruth's office is at Telegraph and Woolsey in Berkeley,
835-2368.
Re: adolescent anger
My son went through some similar issues and we found it VERY helpful for
him to see a psychologist. We took him to Madeline Finegold (Feingold?),
who has an office in Berkeley and in Walnut Creek, and we really liked her
(and so did our son!). He only went for about 5 times (and one visit for
parents only), but we saw a marked improvement.
Also, there was a somewhat superficial, but interesting, article in Working
Mother magazine this month or last on how boys are socialized to ONLY
express anger, no other emotions.
Also, you may want to check out the website www.6seconds.org. Six Seconds
is a non-profit that does emotional intelligence trainings for parents and
teachers. FYI it takes 6 seconds for the chemical reaction of anger in the
brain to dissipate, so the advice of "counting to ten" is excellent!
Good luck!
Re: Couples Therapist in Lamorinda (Sept 2003)
Dr. Beth Ferree in Lafayette (925-284-3665) has helped us a lot.
She is a great listener but quickly helps you get to the root of
the problem (in a gentle, supportive way) and then gives you
easy suggestions (make some time to talk, go out more as a
couple, etc.) for improving your everyday relationship. She was
not covered by my insurance but was worth every out-of-pocket
penny.

RE: Couples Counseling in Lamorinda
We use Dr. Elizabeth Ferree in Lafayette, (925) 284-3665.
She has made my husband comfortable with the idea of
therapy, no small task! No idea if she has openings,
but you may want to give her a call.
Re: Couples Therapist in Lamorinda (Sept 2003)
Leah Fisher, LCSW has an office in the Lamorinda area.
510-527-0107
She is an experienced and very reputable therapist
who has over 30 years experience.
From talking with her recently, I understand that in addition to
the marital therapy she has offered for many years she is being
certified in an approach developed by John Gottman.
It sounds like a very active and apparently
successful approach to marital therapy.

I saw your posting and the first therapist that came to mind is
my colleague, Lor Fjerkenstad. Given the concerns listed in

Re: Insightful marriage counselor (Feb 2005)
My partner and I had a great experience with Lor Fjerkenstad.
She is definetly a smart, insightful couples therapist. She
really helped us with some difficult communication issues.
What we liked about her was that she was very warm and down-to-
earth. I do believe that she offers a sliding fee, but you'd
have to check with her as to the fee range. Her office is
located in Rockridge , about a 3 minute walk from BART.

Re: adolescent therapy (Jan 1999)
Both of the counselors that we have seen in the past few years have
experience with adolescents. Dean Lobovits and Jenny Freeman.
They both practice in a building on the corner of 5th and Cedar in
Berkeley. It's my impression that Dean mostly does Marriage & family
counseling now, though he used to work in Teen Centers. And Jenny mostly
does kids now. She saw my stepdaughter from age 10 through age 13. They
are the authors of a book called "Playful Solutions to Serious Problems" (I
think), which gives you an idea of their philosophy.
Good luck! Dawn

We have been very happy with Jennifer Freeman. Her office is at 5th Street

Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (June 1999)
I recommend:
Jennifer Freeman
5th & Cedar, Berkeley
526-2336
Jenny has worked with our daughter from age 10 to present (13). She does
child and teen therapy. She's a warm and non-threatening woman with a
pleasant Austrailian accent. She's going to visit relatives in Australia
for a month or so, starting next week (I think), so you might want to call
right away if the situation is urgent.

Re: Seeking "wise sage" woman therapist (May 2002)

is wonderful. I think she probably saved my life at one point.
She is very unusual in that she gives good, practical advice,

solutions to problems. She is consistently positive and
empathetic. I like her because she doesn't dwell on unhappy
childhoods, etc.,etc. - rather she is strengthening, and very
much in the present. She is also very honest, and has a great
sense of humor. Because of her good work I was able to get
through my depression, and out of an abusive marriage, and move
on with my life. Dr. Goldstine has also worked extensively with
children, and she is also an authority on cults if that is of
any bearing in your situation.

Re: Female therapist for relationship issues (Dec 2002)
Sharon Gregory is a wonderful therapist who works in Berkeley --
her office is on Shattuck at Ashby. She's smart smart smart,
and she doesn't hesitate to give her opinion or to ask tough
questions. She's definitely not a sit-quietly-and-listen type.
She's empathetic and kind, but she's also very professional. We
did a lot of great work together, and now -- two years after my
sessions with her ended -- I still use the skills she taught me
and remember the advice she gave me, particularly when it comes
to conflicts within my marriage. I found her quite good in
helping me untangle relationship issues.
Re: Imago Relationship Therapy (Feb 2003)
Zona Gregory is also an excellent couples counselor, one of the

Re: Help for 4-year-old who has trouble adjusting (June 2002)
I would highly recommend Dr Philip Gross and his wife, Miriam
Gross, who is a LCSW. They work together - your son would meet
with Dr. Gross and during their session you would meet with
Miriam. Miriam works with the parents on ways to handle
different situations, and is most helpful. They are really
wonderful and have been very helpful to us -- our son has a
similar situation as you describe. Dr. Gross is in Albany, on
Marin Avenue.

Re: Help with communication - No touchy-feely stuff (May 2004)
My husband & I are seeing Howard Hamburger (653-6393) He's in
Oakland off Piedmont Ave. We had seen two other couples
counselors before (from the ucb recommendations) and while they
were nice their approach didn't work for us. We are dealing
with many issues - children (yes the relationship went downhill
after our child was born), depression and financial stress in
our life. We view life completely differently and can hardly
have a conversation without arguing. With Howard's help we are
slowly getting through this. He's very intuitive, does not get
emotionally involved (which the others did) and knows how to
keep you on track. Feel free to email me with any questions.
Good luck. Until seeing Howard I had lost faith in couples
counseling.
Re: Couples Counseling
I can strongly recommend Howard Hamburger, MFCC, as a marriage counsellor.
I believe he's been at it for 20+ years and he brings a wealth of caring and
insights. I don't know if he has any openings, but I expect my partner & I
will be wrapping up our own sessions in the not too distant future.
Unfortunately, he's neither inexpensive nor particularly close to UC: Our
sessions are $90. His office is at 19 Gleneden Ave in Oakland, which is just
off Piedmont Ave. near Pleasant Valley Ave. His work number is 653-6393.
Re: African American therapist for teen
Lisa Hardy is an outstanding and highly respected Psychiatrist at
Children's Hospital in Oakland. She has seen numerous teens and is
compassionate, sensitive and, well, magical! I was surprised not to see
her name listed on previous recommendations but I know many other
parents whose teens have been helped by her, as was my own (not of
color). I don't know her experience with biracial and adoption issues
but do know she's wonderful with adolescents. Her phone number
at Childrens - 428-3571

Re: Therapist to help with conflict with father (Feb 2000)

Re: Therapist to help with conflict with father (Feb 2000)
A therapist I'd recommend is Heidi Harrison, MFT. She specializes in children

humor, which I find very helpful in therapy work. Her number is
(510)869-2342. Her office is in Montclair. I think she also has an office in
albany.

Re: Therapist for feuding mom and 15-y-o son (Sept 2004)
I highly recommend Michael (Mick) Hausauer (4281 Piedmont,
Oakland 654-2311). Mick has helped my entire family at various
times over the last few years, and recently saw my son and me to
help us through our communication issues (it worked!). He has
also seen my son individually to help him deal with a traumatic
event. Initially our son was reluctant to go to him, but we insisted
he go at least three times. He ended up continuing to see him
voluntarily for several months...with impressive results. Mick has a
kind, low-key style (without being touchy-feely) that kids respond
to. I appreciate his practical/results-oriented approach.

High on my list is Bob Heavner (843-4377). Bob deals almost exclusively
with adolescents and their many issues, including drugs/alcohol, family issues,
video/computer addictions, etc.
Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (June 1999)
Two men I know who have good reputations for working with teen boys are:
Dr. Bob Heavner psychologist 843-4377
So much depends on the fit, but all are reputable and come with good
recommendations.
Re: Hostile 11-year-old son (May 2003)
Please don't walk, but run: first to your pediatritian for
a thorough checkup and then to either a psychologist or a
psychiatrist. It could be many things besides emotional
issues: Non Verbal Learning Disabilities, ADD/ADHD, or even
a mental health problem (depression for example). There is
a wonderful MFT in Albany who specializes in kids and
families, and runs social skills groups for kids with
social/emotional issues. I find her empathic, experienced,
and skilled. Her name is Toby Hendon.

Re: therapist for a child
For almost a year our 9-year-old has been attending a weekly four-child
play group run by Toby Hendon (in Albany, 869-4534). It's been very good
for his social skills, communication skills, and emotional stability.
Toby's perceptive, gentle, intelligent, and effective; I'd recommend her
for just about any child. John (6/99)
Re: Therapist to help us heal after Infidelity (March 2005)
Both my husband and I are eternally grateful to Dr. Mary Herget
who practices in SF. She used to teach grad classes to student
therapists in Berkeley and I believe she used to practice in
Berkeley, but may no longer. Her number is 415-221-9973. To
this day, I send a holiday card to her updating her on our
family life.
At one of our last sessions with her all those years ago, she
asked us what she could tell her students that, in our
experience, helped us begin to rebuild our relationship. We
both agreed that we had to take responsibility for our part in
the relationship and that both of us had a role to play in its
breakdown.
Now, 11 years and 3 children later, I still believe that.
Re: Therapist for college-aged daughter (March 2002)
I saw Ruth Hill as a therapist on a couple of different
occasions when I was in college, then graduate school.
I thought she was wonderful for me at that juncture in
life; supportive, reinforcing, somewhat holistic, and
she helped me grapple with a couple harsh crises. She
is very Jungian, and a lot of her work deals in rather
abstract concepts.
Re: Couples Therapist in Lamorinda (Sept 2003)
I am a Marriage & Family Therapist with an office in Lafayette
and in Berkeley. I do see a lot of couples in my pratice in
Lafayette. I would be happy to talk to you (or e-mail) to help
find a good match for you. My office number is 925-210-9964 or
e-mail. Good luck.

couples and doing child therapy. They are excellent clinically and have
impeccable ethics. Sara
Re: Recommendations for women therapists (July 1999)
In response to the person looking for a woman therapist. I'd like to
recommend Anneke Hogeland, MS, MFCC. Her office is on Solano Avenue
in Berkeley. She is quite extraordinary with an emphasis on "solution
oriented counseling." She is extremely dedicated to the well-being of
her clients and is very skilled, insightful, warm and creative. She
is also skilled in hypnotherapy.
She can be reached at 510 528-4788.
Re: Therapist for anxiety and depression (Dec 2004)
A few years ago I was experiencing panic attacks and terrible
insomnia due to severe anxiety, and I had a really positive
experience with Dr. Karen Hollinger-Jackson. She's in the City
of Alameda. I liked her interactive style -- she listened
well, but also provided suggestions rather than just leading me
to answer my own questions, which I really needed and
appreciated.

Re: Seeking "wise sage" woman therapist (May 2002)
Melissa Holub, Ph.D., is wonderful -- I can't recommend her highly
enough. She is in Berkeley, on Shattuck Avenue.
Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (June 1999)
I recommend Katya Hope at 848-2109. She's very skilled, empathetic and has
a strong background in working with kids with learning disabilities. She's
on Delaware in Berkeley.
Re: Couples Therapist in San Francisco (Oct 2004)
My husband and I went to Peter Howard in SF in Pacific Heights.
He is a behavioral guy, and really good. I wish I had his
contact info, but don't right now. He was very insightful, and
good at forcing ''balance'' between us (in our relationship, I am
actually the faster talker, etc. Peter was ON me, and didn't
let me zip around things). He is a *very* smart guy (not to
sound like a jerk, but my husband is an attorney and I am a PhD
and we have had therapists who just didn't keep up).
Only downside is that he is pretty expensive (which I guess
comes with the territory of being really good).
Need a smart therapist to keep me in line!
Re: ''Sex-Positive'' Therapist? (July 2005)
I have a recommendation for you. Joanne Long Howell, 510-848-9325. I know
Joanne would be positive and accepting toward your life choices, and she has a lot
of experience working with people in a similar situation as yours.

Re: Therapist for troubled 15-year-old (April 2002)
A recommendation on a therapist for teens is: Karen Hollinger Jackson. Our
peditricians's office recommended her and we used her for a short term
issue. A slight drawback for you is that she practices in Alameda. When I
asked our doctor replied that she specializes in adolescents and they have
had very good feedback about her. Realizing that it takes a very special
person to work with adolescents, we went to her and were impressed!

My son has been very happy with his therapist Alf
Johnson. He isn't young (50's) but he is very cool and
totally able to relate to what my shy 15 year old son is
going through. He was recommended to me by a therapist
acquaintance who saw him with her son. His office is in
Walnut Creek and his phone number is 925-952-4841. We
also have seen various therapists over the years and Dr.
Johnson is by far the best we've seen.

Re: Therapist to help us heal after Infidelity (March 2005)
I think that Cheryl Jones, 510-653-7374, has a good grasp on the
issues surrounding marital stress and families, and what it takes
to maintain a union. She certainly doesn't believe that
relationships are doomed if infidelity has occurred.
Anonymous
Re: Therapist for depression (July 2001)
I recommend Cheryl Jones as a therapist. (653-7374) I've suffered from
depression for years and have gone in and out of counseling. She's the first
therapist I've found who really seems able to zone in on where I get stuck and
help me create concrete ways to overcome them, in addition to being empathetic
and creating a space for me to express pent-up feelings. She can't prescribe
meds, but she can work with your husband to figure out whether meds would help
and his primary care physician probably could prescribe them. Alternatively, he
could get a limited referral to a psychiatrist to get an appropriate
prescription.

Re: couples therapy (May 2004)
I don't know about the therapists you mentioned, but we have been to several
different ones and can say that we have never found anyone close to the
effectiveness of Denah Joseph. She doesn't beat around the bush, is fair, and
pushes both members of the couple to grow individually and as a couple. She is
located in Oakland on Peidmont

Re: Help with communication - No touchy-feely stuff (May 2004)
I'd recommend Dr. Deborah Joy (phone: 524-8284, practice is on
Solano in Albany). She's very smart and compassionate, and
good at helping couples work on practical communication skills
and reestablishing loving feelings. The emphasis is building
the positive in your relationship, and working through problems
without getting mired in blame-throwing and anger. She's
helped us with some of the exact issues you mention: making a
decision about a second child when the first (though deeply
loved) stressed our marriage, dealing with a period of
infertility (which she herself struggled with, having a child
fairly late in life), and anger management. We were in bad
shape when we started with her, and are on much more solid
ground now...and happily expecting our second child. Good luck
to you!
Re: Couples Counseling
I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Deborah Joy, PhD, in North Berkeley, at
524-8284. She helped put my 15 year relationship and 9 year marriage
back together so that we're much better together than we had ever been
before. One less divorce, one more in-tact family, and one more
satisfying and hope-filled love affair later, I don't think we could have
done it without her. Deborah is highly intelligent, highly intuitive, and I
can't recommend her enough. Best of luck.
Re: Sexual Abuse (Dec 2002)

Sorry to hear you're going through rough times. I'd like to recommend Susan J.

Re: Divorce & Children's Issues
Milton Kalish, LCSW, holds class sessions for children of divorce
at the Lafayette Orinda Pres. Church (classes have nothing to do with
the church). They are held simultaneously with the parenting group
which meets every Monday evening at 6:30. (These meetings are great,
by the way, with childcare provided, all for $3.00!) So you're both
learning and receiving support!
He has about three 8-week sessions per year at a cost of I believe
$60. He is extremely compassionate and loving, uses art and games to
draw out the children's feelings. My 7 year old daughter likes it a
lot and always begs to go.
He MAY have an Oakland location, too. His number in Lafayette is
925/299-0924.

Re: Therapist for husband's sexual addiction (Sept 2004)
My husband saw Dr. Charles King in Berkeley for therapy after I
discovered his sex addiction problem. My husband was very
willing to go to therapy. (He also tried going to an SAA (Sex
Addicts Annonymous) meeting, and liked it, but found one on one
therapy more appealing.) Our schedule at first was for him to go
every week, but I accompanied him on alternate weeks so that we
could do couples work to facilitate his recovery. After a year
and a half or so we were able to taper off to two appointments a
month, one with me, and one without. After a year of that my
husband was recovered enough that we decided to just do couples
work. And now after a year of that we are ''fixed''. But as a
caution... therapy only works if the people involved are willing
to change. Give therapy a try, but also be prepared to make some
hard choices.
Re: Therapist to help with miscarriage grief (June 2003)
To help you with your loss, I highly recommend Kim Kluger-Bell,
whose office is on Solano Avenue, 524-1475. I have no idea if
Kim takes Pacificare, but I do know she has worked with people
in the past to get on their insurance. Kim has written a
seminole book on pregnancy loss, called Unspeakable Losses. If
you can't get to see her, I at least highly recommend you read
her book. Of all the books available about miscarriage, I
consider hers the best. My husband and I were patients of Kim's
for a while to help us with relationship problems stemming from
multiple losses. We both enjoyed seeing her and found her to be
both compassionate and practical in her approach. I hope you can
manage to see Kim. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

For the person looking for a counselor for a child/young adult I highly
recommend Mario LaMort. He is in San Anselmo and well worth the drive.
He is very direct and can zone in on what the problem is and how to work

post-partum depression. She charges on a sliding scale basis.

Re: adolescent therapy
I have recommendations for two therapists that my family has used and
were very pleased with:
Scott Lines Ph.D.
5435 College Av
Oakland
482-8460
Scott Lines was very helpful to my husband, our children, and me when he
was doing a post-doc at Kaiser Oakland in 1993. We consulted with him for
a "second-opinion" and were very impressed with him for the few months we
saw him. Circumstances with 10 visit limit at Kaiser neccessitated that
we go elswhere for long-term therapy. Scott was very perceptive. It seems
that his advice and diagnosis certainly were on target. He really knew
what he was talking about! The kids liked him too, though they weren't
with him too long.
Good luck!
Re: Family therapist (Jan 1999)
We were very pleased with the family therapy we received from Dean Lobovits.
He is an MFCC, and his office is in Berkeley, not far from the 4th Street
Shopping area. His phone number is 527-4569. We saw him in many
configurations: As a couple's counselor; as a family counselor with my
stepdaughter; with various important people in our lives for a single
session (such as my mother, for instance). He has experience with kids and
teens, and he's not attached to any particular structure for a family:
whatever works for you is OK. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Dawn
RE: counselor for adolescent (Jan 1999)
Both of the counselors that we have seen in the past few years have
experience with adolescents. Dean Lobovits and Jenny Freeman.
They both practice in a building on the corner of 5th and Cedar in
Berkeley. It's my impression that Dean mostly does Marriage & family
counseling now, though he used to work in Teen Centers. And Jenny mostly
does kids now. She saw my stepdaughter from age 10 through age 13. They
are the authors of a book called "Playful Solutions to Serious Problems" (I
think), which gives you an idea of their philosophy.
Good luck! Dawn
Re: Couples Counseling
We love our counselor, Dean Lobovits. He has an office at 5th and Cedar.
Great guy, very perceptive. He might be a bit too much of a SNAG
(Sensitive New Age Guy) for you, though. I'd schedule a trial
visit/interview, and see what you think.
By way of contrast, I worked with another counselor years ago. Her first
name was Barbara--can't remember her last name (which should tell you
something!). My experience with her was so negative it took me years to
get over it. Dean has rehabilitated the whole species of couple's
counselors for me! I can't recommend him highly enough.
Regarding coverage, Dean is NOT on Health Net, but he does take Blue Cross
Prudent Buyer, and many other PPO's. Usually, HMO's provide very limited
Mental Health benefits. Often, it's something like 5 to 20 visits per
year, with a co-pay of $20 to $30, and you have to use THEIR therapists
(which are very few in number). And you have to have your Personal Care
Physician recommend that you do it. Very complex, and almost never worth
it, in my opinion.
Re: Bi-lingual therapist
I would recommend (again) our therapist, Dean Lobovits. I don't know
if he speaks Spanish, but he and his wife are of different
nationalities, he American, she Australian. They both practice at 5th
and Cedar in Berkeley (she does more child therapy; he more couples
work). 527-4569.

also on the staff at the Mt. Diablo Hospital adolescent psych unit so
he sees lots of teenagers. My child really likes his caring style.
Re: Kaiser Therapist for Spirited Child (March 2003)
Oakland Kaiser used to have a group program for elementary
school age kids but I'm not sure if they still do. We had Dr.
Jose Lopez when we needed a specialist to work with our shy 4-y-
o and found Dr. Lopez to be kind, gentle and patient, although
he didn't seem to take much of what we said (our self-
diagnosis?) into consideration when he began working with our
kid. He also seems to have lots of experience working with pre-
teen kids on a variety of issues. By the way, if a therapist
doesn't work out after you make an effort to make things work,
switch to another one. That's what my therapist friend told me.
Re: African-American Couples' Counselor (Feb 2005)
I would recommend Dr. Loland Lowe. He is African American, in
his mid 50's, and is my marriage counselor. He is located in

Re: Grief Counselor (Nov 2001)
I don't have information about any of the names you posted, but I thought
I'd recommend another therapist in case you're interested, because I found
him so extremely helpful. I saw Howard Lunche (LCSW) for bereavement
counseling after my brother died, and I can't say enough good things about
him. He balanced his listening and talking very well, he remembered every
single detail I ever told him about my brother, and he seemed to have
perfect insight into how I was feeling and the development of my grief
process. One last thing (and take it for what it's worth--I don't know if
this describes your situation)... I noticed that all the people you listed
were women... when I was looking for a grief counselor, I thought I would
prefer a woman, but I decided I'd interview all 3 of the people I'd been
referred to (including Howard). But even in that initial phone call, Howard was head and shoulders above the others. He's in the phone book... give him a call.

Re: Grief Counselor (Nov 2001)
For the person requesting recommendations for grief counselors, although
not on your list, I would like to recommend a therapist who helped me
work through some extremely difficult issues around my father's death.
His name is Howard Lunche, and he is an MSW in private practice
specializing in grief. Howard worked with Hospice for many years, and
he was recommended to me through my family doctor, who suggested that I
take his Grief Education class. This class is held the third Saturday
of each month at Alta Bates Herrick campus from 10 AM till 12 noon.
If you are interested in attending, you just need to call him to let
him know you would like to come. He only charges $10 for this class.
He provides valuable information about what grief is all about (and it
is different for everyone). He also gives out a wonderful no-nonsense
booklet that he authored on the subject. To sign up for the class,
call Howard at 841-2930.
I think grief is a very, very specific issue, and to be honest, I don't
know how many therapists are really qualified to deal with it. My
father's death and dying affected every facet of my life. My husband
attended the class, and it gave him a better understanding of why I was
feeling and behaving the way I was. I am forever indebted to Howard
and I cannot say enough good things about him.
By the way, I was seeing another therapist while my father was dying
as well as for awhile after he died. I wish I had met Howard sooner,
as I am convinced it would have helped me to have a more meaningful
experience. The other therapist was not equipped to help me, but what
was unfortunate, is that she did not have the humanity nor the
professionalism to admit this to me. I wasted precious time with my
father that I can never retrieve.
Re: Grief Counselor (Nov 2001)
I would also recommend Howard Lunche in Berkeley. He is gentle,
compassionate, concerned, and really sees who you are.

Re: Counselor/therapist for 13-year-old (Aug 2002)
I highly recommend Phyllis Mace as a wonderful therapist to work with on teen
issues. She knows a lot about the schools in the area, and the different
issues at different schools. Also excellent at working with parents and/or
students to help figure out what will motivate a student, what type of
support he/she may need, etc... Her phone number is 704-8455, and she is
located at 5435 College Ave. in Oakland, in the Rockridge Area. It's a bit
of a trek from Berkeley, but I think she's great.
Re: Therapist who works with teenagers (April 2000)
Phyllis Mace (704-8455) has been effective in getting our teen daughter
through a turbulent, defiant adolescence.
Re: Therapist for anxiety and depression (June 2004)
Try Dr. Shane MacKay on MLK in Berkeley. He treated my
depression and anxiety and I'm very happy with the results.
He has a very low-key respectful attitude.
Re: CBT Therapist for anxiety disorders (Jan 2005)
I highly recommend Paul Malkin, he's a cognitive behaviorial
therapist in Oakland. I don't know if he has specific
expertise in anxiety disorders since that is not my issue but I
have found him extremely helpful in working on my distorted
thoughts. Paul Malkin, 510-494-0328.
Re: Female therapist for relationship issues (Dec 2002)
I want to recommend my therapist Yvonne Mansell,
MFT. I was looking for someone who is non-judgemental,
and not only did I find that, but I learned how judgemental I
am of myself. In therapy I learned to lighten up and then find
compassion for myself. I had been in psychotherapy before,
but at this point in my life, I needed a spiritual approach to
look at what was going on with me, because the other ways
weren't working. I needed a new way to work with what was
bothering me. I was very involved with and very attracted to
the Buddhist approach and Yvonne was able to point out the
things I already had read or knew, and remind me of them.
Because of my appreciation of the teachings I had to stop
and listen... maybe there was something to what she was
saying ... and I learned to apply the teachings in new ways.
She brings a passion for Buddhism and psychotherapy that
was just so useful for me.Yvonne is seemingly
non-directive, but with humor, she made me look in new
ways at myself. She made a very sweet and delicate
impression to me at first, but I learned that she is not like
that at all. I really felt that I could express myself exactly as I
was, and that made me very comfortable. I need to be able
to talk how I think, and I really felt heard.
One other point is that Yvonne is willing as a therapist to
reveal some of her emotions or character flaws that make
her more real, and brings less of a ''sterile'' or non-personal
approach than other therapists might use.
Her office is actually not in Berkeley, but just over the border
in Albany. You can reach her at 528-9551.

March 2003
Regarding Kaiser couples counseling in the most recent
newsletter. I can understand your frustration if this is your
first baby. I wish I had gone to counseling for my first one
too. However, we did not start couple counseling until our
second baby. My counselor is great. Her name is Vicky Marlow
in Lafayette and her phone # is (925) 254-4807. If you or your
husband are working, ask your personnel office if you qualify
for the Employee Assistance Program. This is a program that
allows you to seek counseling for your kids, marriage or
individual for free. It is completly confidential. Vicky
accepts this program. ESP bills her and I do not pay anything
or deal with any paperwork. IT'S GREAT!!! My husband and I work
at the same place so we each get 6 session every 6 month. That
means we have 12 free counseling sections every 6 months. I
strongly recommend this program because you do not want to add
any more financial burden to your problems. Hang in there. It
gets easier with time. Good Luck!!!

Re: Therapist for Lesbian Couple (March 2004)
My partner and I saw Audrey Martin (Oceanview Ave. N. Oakland)
about 7-8 years ago now and thought she was really good.
I'd also recommend Susan Morton in Berkeley.
Good Luck
Re: Therapist for lesbian couple with kids (2001)
Couple of people come to mind initially:
Audry Martin 428-1505
Leslie Sternin 524-7705
Adria Blum 486-8146
All are experienced and lovely woman.
I always recommend people talk with a few people to get a feel for
differences and who
feels most comfortable, especially when there are two people trying to feel
safe.

Re: Post-partum Issues Couples Therapist (Sept 2004)
I highly recommend Matthew Marzell for couples counseling and
couples communications issues. He is going to be doing some
couples workshops and he also has expertise working with entire
families and individuals. My husband and I were recommended to
him by a trusted friend who has had many experiences with
various therapists over the years. My friend said that Matthew
was the most effective counselor he had ever come across and
that with Matthew's tools he and his wife had been able to deal
with issues faster than he ever had with other therapists. I
found my friend's comments to be completely true. Matthew is
aggressive, but in a really good way. He helps you identify
commitments that you want to make in your life and helps you
stick to them. My husband and I went to him when our
relationship was truly falling apart and infidelity had become
an issue. Matthew has an approach that worked wonders for us.
He's a fantastic relationship coach and if it wasn't for him, I
don't know if I'd still be married. Matthew is not a licensed
therapist; he's a counselor with many years of experience. I was
a little hesitant about going to someone who isn't licensed, but
he's completely professional and I think he whipped us into
shape faster than months and months of slow therapy ever would.
He's great! Both my husband and I were both doing our own
individual therapy when we started seeing Matthew (because we
were in such crisis), but we actually stopped seeing our
individual therapists because we thought Matthew was so
effective. He's in Martinez - an easy drive from Berkeley. You
can give Matthew a call at 925-229-3260. I'm also happy to talk
to anyone and give more detail about him.
Re: Female therapist for relationship issues (Dec 2002)
I've seen Laura Mason, and liked her. She's smart, insightful, and
down-to-earth. She's on Santa Fe near Solano. Phone 526-3600.

Re: Couples Counseling
David Max is an excellent couples counselor. He has this canny ability to
teach you how to hear what the other person is saying and at the same time
to feel that he has supported both of you. I believe his telephone number
is (510) 428-1671.
Re: Therapist for lesbian couple with kids (2001)
I am a a therapist who has experience working with lesbian couples, and I
also have a good
understanding of parenting and children's issues in lesbian families. I
would be glad to
talk with you. I also have good referrals as many people like to interview
2 or 3
therapists to see who is the most comfortable match for them as individuals.
Vicki McGuire, MFT 654-4560
Re: Couples Counseling
I understand your situation and can greatly empathize. My husband
and I have had a long, rocky road. We started seeing a therapist together
about 2 years ago before we were even married. I highly recommend our
therapist, Dr. Donald McKillop. He is an excellant, compassionate
therapist and a wonderful human being. And, he practices here in Berkeley
on Channing so he's walking distance to the campus.
In the
mean time, hang in there. I know what its like to be pregnant and
contemplating a divorce. I was there not too long ago. There are
services around to help. It just might take a little research to find
more info about them.
Re: Helping couple through divorce
A therapist named Barbara McMahon has a group for people in transition,
primarily divorce and separation. Over the years, she has been very
helpful to a number of people who I have referred to her.
Number is 925-254-8510.

Re: Couples Therapist in San Francisco (June 2003)

and balanced. we saw him through some stressful times for about
12 sessions. he practices at networks counseling center on
clement street near 19th ave. we learned communication skills
that enhanced our relationship considerably.

Re: Marriage Counselor who accepts MHN? (Sept 2005)
My husband and I were very happy with Jeanne Menary, who takes
MHN. I don't have her # offhand, but you can find it by
googling her. She made us both feel comfortable and had a
smart, perceptive way of framing our issues.

Re: Therapist for college-aged daughter (March 2002)
I had several sessions with Jeanne Menary and liked her
very much. I chose her specifically for her expertise
in helping people cope with pregnancy loss, but our
work spilled into many other areas as well. I highly
recommend her, if your daughter feels comfortable with
her, and would consider going back to her for general
