Kensington Community Center Summer Camp (Kensington, CA)

August 2012

I've been a teacher for the past 6 years and just transitioned to a year-round job. This was my 2nd-- 3rd grader's first summer camp experience. He's an introvert and we were both worried.

We chose KCC because so many kids from our school go there and it's right next door -- familiar territory -- and because the price is so reasonable. I can't tell you how glad I am that we made that choice.

If you are the kind of parent who wants every hour of your kid's time packed with enrichment and rigorous education that will get him/her into Yale, this is not the camp for you.

Instead, it's what so many of us miss about our own childhoods -- a lazy, packed-with-fun, smell-of-grass, hang-with-your-friends and have an absolute blast that you remember in your 30's experience. There's never a shortage of fun things to do, and the environment feels just enough like playing in your neighborhood during The Dog Days that I know my son's memories will be filled with joy, excitement, and sensory delight.

Now, add to this the fact that KCC is not a neighborhood but a very, very safe place with an incredible adult-to-kid ratio, mostly supported by role models in the form of college-age young people who genuinely enjoy playing foozball or tag with kids.

My son blossomed this summer. He grew in social confidence, learned the language of guy buddies, learned games and sports that he likes (and there weren't many before), deepened friendships and made new ones. The deceptively easy-going vibes there mask an exciting summer experience that kids help make themselves, with some of their own choices, instead of being scheduled to the hilt. If they want to, they can dive deep into a new skill or a creative pursuit. The field trips are fabulous. And otherwise, that big lawn is a great place to lounge and hit the Slip-n-Slide (remember them?) to a great soundtrack including Earth Wind and Fire and The Beatles.

In short, I can't recommend -- or thank -- KCC Summer Camp enough. Happy Mom in El Cerrito
