My daughter (age 9 at the time, between 4th and 5th grade)
attended Sally Ride science camp at UC Berkeley and lived in
the dorms for 1 week. She did it with her best friend but this
was her first time away from home for such a long period, and
we weren't sure how it would go. The girls loved their
experience and were well looked after by the excellent,
attentive staff. They almost never had a free moment (they
would call us at 9:20 pm to tell us how busy they were and how
much fun! I highly recommend this program - it gave the girls
such a sense of accomplishment in themselves to be at college
on their own. I think the science instruction was excellent
also.

Re: Summer programs for gifted 4th grader
Education Unlimited is based in Berkeley and runs academic and
artistic summer programs both at Stanford University and UC
Berkeley. Their number is 510.548.6612.
Most programs are overnight, but there are day-camps too (usually
8:30am - 7pm, and some programs have shorter day options 9-5ish).
For elementary school kids there is a Public Speaking Camp,
Computer Camp, and Sally Ride Science Camps.
If the student is entering middle school, there is also an Acting
Camp, and A+ Summer Middle School which is a critical thinking
program where they do reading, writing, and logic/problem solving
projects.
