Re: A place to come together spiritually as a family
Try Unity -- in particular, the Unity of Berkeley (but if there is a Unity church
closer to where you live, give that a try). Unity is a spiritual home for all beliefs.
It focusses on the power of prayer/meditation. The Berkeley Unity church is
eclectic and lively. There is a children's program, too. You can look at their
website: unityberkeley.org. They are located at Arch and Scenic. I just started
going there in late November and I really like it, and I haven't been a regular
church-goer, ever, until now (I'm in my late 50s).

Re: Upbeat church with good gospel music
I, too, have been searching for an upbeat church; last
week I attended one which may well be our new church
home, and it is quite ''upbeat'' :o). It is the Unity
Church in Richmond (on 28th Street, at Nevin). The
congregation is small but ''solid'', having just
celebrated their 50th year together. Two of the things
I like best are that it is multiracial and has a great
''gospel'' style choir. Perhaps there are more elderly
people than young families, but there is a church school
for kids that lasts through the whole service until the
end, when everyone comes together to hold hands around
the sanctuary and sing, ''Let There Be Peace on Earth.''
The friendly congregants told me that church school
attendance varies but can be up to 20 kids. The Unity
beliefs, as I have researched them on the internet,
also seem to be inclusive, such as of gay families like
mine. The service is at 11:00 am on Sunday mornings.
