YWCA Infant Center
August 2002
Does anyone have any experience with the YWCA infant center on
Alice Street in Oakland near Lake Merritt? The location can't
be beat for where I work (Kaiser), and it's small - low
caretaker/infant ratio. It appears to be a very friendly
environment to me. It's very small, however; and I'm also
trying to decide between that and St. John's on College in
Berkeley. The YWCA has a better location (for me and my
husband), and it's also more reasonably priced. But, St. John's
obviously has more resources. I just want to know if there's
something scary about the place that I'm not seeing.
Thanks, Jenny
My oldest son, who is now nine, went to the Y when he was a baby
(up until age two or so). We liked it a lot in the old Y building
, where I gather it is again, but liked it a lot less when it was
in the building further down, next to a methadone clinic. I don't
imagine the staff is the same, but we found the infant staff to
be excellent, and the management (Geneva, if she is still there)
to be very professional and experienced. I thought it worked a
little bit less well for preschool, but I don't think they are
doing anything but infant care anymore, so that's kind of a moot
point.
