Re: Kid-friendly cabin near a lake May 2003
There are several lake towns up near Sonora that provide great,
lowkey, kid-friendly vacation lodging. We spend a week in Twain
Harte most years, which has a ''private'' lake (you need to make
sure you get a cabin with lake privileges). The lake has a roped
off swimming area for little ones, and a couple floating rafts
for bigger kids (and grownups) to swim to. There's a wonderful
grocery store in town, along with some okay restaurants. And the
historic town of Columbia is only 30 minutes away for a very fun
day trip. For Twain Harte lodging info, go to

Up the road from Twain Harte is Strawberry and Pinecrest. I know
they have rentals also.

The Rivers Resort in Strawberry, CA is about a mile or less away
from Pinecrest Lake resort. You should call soon as people
reserve their cabins a year ahead. We have stayed in cabin #2
and #3? in front of the river. They are both great cabins, #2
has river view with 2 nice bathrooms, #3 is in front of the
river, but it only has one bathroom. We have stayed with 4-6
people in the past and they both have worked fine. Their number
is 209-965-3278. We just cancelled our week of June 14th-21st
(Cabin #2) as I'm due to have my second child in August. We
highly recommend the resort which has a swiming pool, the
strawberry store right next to it and a restaurant across the
street. If you're not familiar with this area, Strawberry is
right up from Twain Heart. During the winter is a ski resort.
The weather is wonderful during the summer!
