For the many people who inquire about psychotherapists, I just
wanted to let all of you know of a great resource, an
information and referral search tool (an online directory) on
the Alameda County Psychological Association's website:
http://www.alamedapsych.org/iandr/iandrsearch.php
You can select a psychologist by population served, areas of
practice, office location, payment method, etc. The
psychologists listed are all fully licensed by the Board of
Psychology and are members of the California Psychological
Association. Of course, you can also call for a referral at 510-
433-9580, but I find that many people like the convenience of
an online directory.
Good luck. M.K.

Does anyone have any recent recommendations for a wonderful female
psychologist who I can see for post-partum depression? I do need to
see someone who can prescribe medications. I'm not in the Kaiser
network, and I'd like to find someone in the Berkeley area. Thank
you.
Hello I don't know of a doctor -- but just as an FYI -- psychologists
cannot prescribe meds. You will need a psychiatrist -- or a primary
care physician or another type of medical practitioner like a nurse
practitioner.

I suffered from PPD with my first child and vowed I would get help the
second time around which I did. I highly recommend Dr. Shoshanna
Bennett (www.drshosh.com). She is simply the best and highly respected
within the community. Thanks to her guidance I was able to avoid the
black hole of PPD.
Best of luck to you!

Seeking opinions about Dr. Cary Littell and Dr. Ilene Philipson.
I have moved from postpartum depression into something close to
major depression, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who
has seen one of these two therapists. Thank you.

I can highly recommend Dr. Phillipson. She is a very smart,
warm and competent therapist with many years of experience. She
is very ethical, sensitive and be able to help with your
depression.

Hi,
I don't know about the 2 therapists you mentioned. But, I
wanted to respond as I also have struggled with a prolonged
postpartum depression. For me, a lot of old stuff came to the
forground after having my second child and I was pretty
imobilized. I have been working with Lee Safran, who has a
practice on Solano and specializes in both depression and
postpartum issues. She has been a lifesaver for me offering
practical ideas as well as wise insight into some truly
unresolved issues. She also runs a postpartum stress group
which I can't attend (scheduling) but I imagine it's quite
helpful. Her number is 510 496-6096. All my best to you and
my encouragement in taking care of yourself - it makes all the
difference.

I just moved to this area from out-of-state and am seeking a
female psychologist who specializes in the Jungian approach to
therapy. I used to have a wonderful Jungian therapist at my
previous home: caring, well-spoken, great in guidance counseling
to help me resolve some old family conflicts. Now I should also
add fertility counseling to the list as I had two tragic
miscarriages this past year. If you know a great Jungian
therapist in the Berkeley/Oakland area who meets this profile,
please let me know. Thank you!

I've been recommended to see Dr. Eugenie Hsu for psychotherapy by a friend who
saw her in a group for social phobias and really liked her- does anyone have any
experience working with her in one-on-one therapy? Thanks for any feedback.

I'd recommend Dr. Eugenie Hsu for any adult going through a difficult time especially with
depression, anxiety or trauma issues. I know she specializes in EMDR therapy for trauma survivors and
is one of the best folks in the field. Overall, an excellent clinician--very personable,
culturally-sensitive and efficient therapist. I think best way to contact her is through her website:

Hello,
I would like to highly recommend Dr. Catharine Freemire in the
Creekside office park in Walnut Creek. She is very easy to talk
to, gives great feedback and also offers services in 'coaching'
which might help you in dealing with your partner who is
unwilling to join you in counseling.
She can be reached at 939-4554
