My 13 y/o boy is interested in playing the electric base. I have
checked postings of professionals being recommended. Since I am not sure he will
stick to this idea, I am reluctant to invest on a $60/hour instructor. Any young
adult/teenager who is interested in tutoring this instrument in the Albany
area ?
Thanks for any recommendations.

My daughter was going to Heather Kerrihard, who has a studio in
Berkeley. It wasn't $60, more like $30 an hour. It was well worth it. She learned so much!
Heather is a patient and learned teacher. And ''cool'' too. Her number

I am looking for a current recommendation for a guitar teacher for my
two boys, ages 12 and 8. They both play other instruments and would
like to learn to play an acoustic guitar. I would like to find someone
who could either come to our home in El Cerrito or is located nearby.
Thanks so much.

My daughter (now 13) has been studying with Peter Morley for a few
years now, and really likes his style. Peter has a great mellow vibe,
can really rock out, and encourages kids to play the songs they love
(my daughter has done lots of Beatles). He also has nice annual
recitals. He lives in Benicia, but teaches in Albany, right next to
Colusa Circle in Kensington. Two thumbs way up!
Peter can be reached at guitaralpha@yahoo.com or 847-3432.

I recommend Steve Gibson and his wife Andrea Hurley. They are both
excellent teachers who really engage their students. My son started
taking lessons from Steve when he was 8 years old and started playing
in rock bands through BandWorks at 9. Steve has been a great music
teacher and general positive influence in his life. My son is now 13
and still studies with Steve. Steve's positive approach made a all the
difference.

My 9 year old son is taking guitar lessons from a talented
guitar/mandolin player named Dave Rosenfeld, and is really enjoying it.
Dave is a patient and knowledgeable teacher, based in Berkeley. He can
be reached on his mobile phone (415) 407-7162.

I'm looking for some current recommendations for a guitar teacher for my 8
1/2 year old son who has been playing guitar for about 1 1/2 years. He
has been studying classical, but is very interested in learning more
rock/pop styles. N.Oakland/S. Berkeley is ideal, but I'm open to
traveling for the right teacher. Thanks!

I highly recommend Roger Riedlbauer for guitar lessons. He teaches
out of his home in Temescal neighborhood of Oakland. He's fantastic
with kids -- and adults -- and can teach any style, including the
popular music your son is interested in. He is patient, fun and
flexible in addition to being a very talented and knowledgable
musican himself. His number is 510-599-6788.

Maybe it's a midlife crisis, but I just decided I really want to learn to
play the guitar (folk). I think a group class would be more social, not
to mention cheaper. I looked in the archives, but the last recommendation
for group adult guitar classes was from 7/03. I checked the Berkeley
Adult School website and they are not offering any guitar classes this
season. Any suggestions? Berkeley or Albany would be most convenient for
me; El Cerrito, Oakland, or Emeryville less convenient but probably
doable.

I am looking for a guitar teacher for my 15 year old
daughter. She is a beginner. We live in oakland so we
don't want to go too far. South Berkeley is OK. She is
looking for someone who can teach her in an informal
way learning to play songs she is interested in (rock,
folk, etc). We're not interested in a specific program or
performing in recitals. Preferably someone on the
younger side and easy going. It is not important if the
teacher is male of female. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks

Ernie Mansfield (Mansfield Music - 510-524-0906) is a great guitar teacher. He

I have 2 very different sons who studied guitar with Dave Cohen. Dave is
a terrific teacher who teaches out of his home near College and Ashby in
Berkeley. He teaches all styles and is very good at catering his teaching
to different ages, levels, and interests. He knows a lot, but makes the
lessons fun. He can be reached at 845-0199.

Guitar Teacher: I can strongly recommend my teacher, Jeffrey
Rugato, for all levels of guitar from beginner to advanced. He
is an excellent, gifted teacher who excels at not only
developing your skills but also your understanding and intuition
about the guitar. He also helps you quickly move into developing
your sty and musicality. He has a large knowledge base about
various styles of music and guitar and so can customize the
lessons to student interest. He is friendly and flexible and can
work well with children through adults. My husband and I have
been taking lessons with him for several months and not only
love improving our guitar playing but also have a great time in
the lessons. Jeffrey can be reached at 510-652-5432. His rates
are negotiable and all are under $30/hr.

I don't think there has been a recent posting for a guitar
teacher so thought I'd post this since I just recommended my
brother-in-law to a parent whose child was intereseted in guitar
lessons. I often see people recommending family members and
since my brother-in-law has brought so much music into my
childrens' lives I feel proud to recommend him:
David Cohen is an experienced classroom teacher who loves working
with kids and teaching music. He is building a vibrant business
giving children the gift of creating their own unique musical
expression through the guitar. He really enjoys teaching songs
the kids really want to play, as well as giving them a solid
foundation to become a well-rounded guitarist. Very reasonable
rates. He is now accepting students during the summer and for
the fall. His number is (510) 845-0199.

I'd like to put in a plug for a great guitar teacher for both
kids and adults. If you are looking for someone who is not only
patient but effective, contact Steve Inglis at 510-843-1874. He
teaches out of his house in Berkeley. He is an incredible
guitarist but more importantly, he is a fabulous teacher!

My son and a friend(12 year olds) would like to take electric
guitar lessons togther. They are both musically educated through
the basics of being in the BUSD(flute and clarinet) system and
new to guitar. This is a new idea to both families and we are not
sure how it would work best - 1 hour for both, or 15 minutes each
and then 30 mins. together or other ideas? Ideally north
Berkeley, at either families home or at teachers site. How much
and who is good?

I'd like to recommend Clark Suprynowicz, my daughter's bass
guitar teacher, a composer and musician and all-around
great guy. He's fluent in dozens of musical styles, from
jazz through through rock classical and contemporary, he
also teaches composition, and he's and a most inspiring
musical influence for any teenager. My 15-year-old
daughter, not too easy to impress, thinks the world of him:
he's easy to get along with, patient and just all-around
cool. Clark has worked as a bassist with John Zorn, Bill
Frisell, Art Lande, Max Roach, and Tom Waits, and his
operas are brilliant.

My almost 10 year old son is MAYBE interested in learning guitar.
I've taught him a few chords...but I don't really play regularly
or well.
My son has a social anxiety disorder called Selective Mutism. He
doesn't talk to most adults, and no new adults.
Is there a teacher out there who could teach a boy who at first
may not respond at all, but would sit and listen and take it all
in, then over time would (hopefully) participate and play, but
sitll may not speak to the teacher? This would have to be
someone (I'm thinking a young man/teenager) who would be really
fun, cool, maybe silly, but VERY patient. It's tricky working
with selectively mute kids, but can be done. Thanks for any
ideas.
I haven't gone to the archives for this cause even though there
are teachers highly recommended, this is an unusual situation.
Thanks for you help.

We have a great guitar teacher who is interested in working
with your son. He is mid 20's, I think, and very good with my
7 year old son and his 6 year old friend. My son has been
taking lessons with him for about 9 months. Tom is a musician
(in a band)who obviously loves teaching kids. He is cool, fun,
playful, creative, flexible and very patient. He may even be
able to come to your house for lessons, which could help ease
the strain of a new situation for your son. His name is Tom
Carns, and you can reach him at 336-3303. Feel free to email
me if you want more information.

I would like to take beginning guitar lessons with my 5 year old
daughter. Any reccomendations for a teacher? (We can't pay a lot of
money.) Thanks,
Jessica
I'd like to recommend a really good guitar teacher. Tommy Carns
has been teaching guitar/bass to people of all ages for six
years, the bulk of his students being teenagers from
Piedmont/Montclair/North Oakland. He's taught kids as old as
five and as young as seventy. The atmosphere during his lessons
is relaxed yet challenging. For those who want to read music,
he has methods and books that help make it fun. For those who
want to learn music by ear he teaches how to learn songs, how to
accompany one's voice with guitar and gives tips on playing with
others.
Tommy charges $45 per hour for lessons in his home(Glenview
District of Oakland) and $50 per hour for house calls. You can
reach him at 510-336-3303 or at tommycarns@yahoo.com. I highly
recommend him!

11 yr old girl wants to learn to play electric guitar.
Looking for a patient person to teach very basic guitar.
Not interested in a class (too shy)
Thanks!
In response to the request for a guitar teacher for individual
lessons (not a class), I can highly recommend Peter Morley. My
son has gone to him now for 3 years, and started from ground
zero--never having even touched a guitar before his first lesson.
Peter, as a father of 4 children, is extremely patient, kind,
supportive, and successful with his students. And, besides, he's
very ''cool,'' having performed in his own band. Our son (now 18)
continued his lessons even during a very bad bout of senioritis,
when everything else went by the wayside. Peter is located in
Albany and can be reached at 847-3432.

My daughter (and lots of her friends) learned to play guitar
from Lisa Zeiler, the lead guitar for the band ''Rebecca

Our 14 year old has become interested in playing the
electric guitar. He is taking beginning band in high
school. We are seeking a patient and fun person to give
him private lessons. We'd prefer someone in north berkeley
or who would be willing to come to our house, but we are
willing to go farther for the right person.
My 15 year old son has been very happy with his electric
guitar teacher Kerry Yates. He teaches in North Berkeley
and charges a reasonable 24$ a half hour. His phone
number is (415)681-3649. A couple of my son's friends also
take lessons from him and are also pleased with him.

I have a 9 year old son who has been taking guitar lessons
for the last 10 months. Our teacher is moving back to the
East Coast and we are looking for someone who lives in

$30-40.

My 13 y.o. son happily endorses Rob Michaels
who teaches guitar at Music Works, on San Pablo Ave, south
of Potrero, in El Cerrito. (Music Works is a sweet store, btw.)
Rob charges $25 per half hour lesson. My son takes 1 hr lessons, and his two best friends take 1/2 hr lessons, also with Rob.
Rob is my son's third music teacher, and his second guitar teacher.
Rob books his lessons thru his home phone, apparently dedicated to this purpose: 707-645-8583.
He's maybe 50 years old.
My son is enamored of punk, but I think Rob is very versatile.

My 10-year-old daughter would like to take acoustic guitar
lessons. She would like to play fun/cool/recent music with a
teacher that is friendly and patient. I would like to find

Gordon Kahan (my legal man friend) runs the Advanced Music

I have seen the listings for acoustic guitar teachers, but
wonder if there are any other recommendations for women who
will work with a fourteen year old girl who likes hard rock,
punk music etc. Oakland would be best, but Berkeley or Albany
is fine.
Lisa Zeiler has experience with teaching teenagers. She is a
wonderful guitar player and is very present with her students
as well as hip to the young culture. She has a studio in
Oakland on College Ave. Not sure of the exact address but her
phone number is 845-5432. Feel free to e-mail me if you have

My daughter, almost 16, has taken guitar from Brian Bertino
for a year and a half or so. This is the first musical
instruction she has taken and Brian has been really able to
inspire her as well as teach her.

I recommend Brian Bertino as a guitar teacher, 845-4704.He taught my son
last year, when my son was a HS freshman, and focused the lessons on the
kind of music my son was interested in.--Joan S.
In response to the person recently seeking guitar lessons:
I heartily recommend my teenage daughter's teacher, Caren
Armstrong. She teaches in North Berkeley and in the Oakland
Hills. She is a very patient, skillful, and upbeat teacher, with
a sense of humor and a great ear. She teaches using songs of folk
and older rock styles - both strumming and finger picking. She
can be reached directly at carensing AT aol.com, or you can contact
me

Does anyone have experience with group guitar lessons, such as those
at the Piedmont Piano Co. or Piedmont Adult School? I'd really like to
learn guitar, but find the cost of private lessons rather daunting. Do
group lessons give enough individual attention so that rank beginners
such as myself can make some progress?
Elizabeth
The Alameda Community Multicultural Center offers some wonderful music
classes on a donation basis. An acoustic guitar program is offered for
teenagers and adults with little, some or no experience. Drop in or continuous
students are welcome. The class meets every Tuesday from 6pm-9pm.
ACMCC also offers a Latin Ensemble Class that focuses on Latin American
instrumental pieces. Learn how to compose and arrange songs in various Latin
American music in a small group environment. This class meets every Thursday
from 6-9 pm.
For more information on the ACMCC offerings call 510-521-9405.

About five years ago, I took a group guitar lesson through
Berkeley Adult Education. I thought the teacher was excellent,
and your experience will most likely depend on the instructor
and not the group aspect. My instructor made beginning guitar
doable and homework was fun. I would suggest that if you are
not prepared to practice outside of class, that you might not
get the most of your lessons. Also, people tend not to follow
up on these classes, so that by the end of the session, we were
down to two students (including me), so I felt as if I was
getting a private lesson.
Daphne
You could try calling ALMA in Orinda (just off Hwy 24). We go
there for music lessons 3 times a week and it is only about 8
minutes from Rockridge (when traffic is light). They only
charge $18/30 minute lesson -- that's for private lesson, but
they also just charge $18/hour per individual for groups. The
groups they currently have going are more like ''band'' or
ensemble, but you could contact them and see if they know of
anyone else that they could pair you up with.
Sorry, I don't know the number but they are in the phone book.
Best Regards!

I'd like to give my husband acoustic guitar lessons for
Christmas. I've checked the site and found a few names and some
old phone numbers. Does anyone have a current phone number for
Steve Gibson and/or a recommendation for a great guitar teacher?
Thanks!

Check with 5th String music store (near Ashby BART) to see if
they can track down Steve Gibson and/or recommend another
teacher. A long time ago, I took lessons there from Cindy Lowe
and liked her a lot.

The best acoustical guitarist around, recommended by the
Conservatory, and the son of a famous composer, is Gyan Riley
who is available for teaching. His e-mail address is
gwunderthump@yahoo.com. He will be performing on December 14th
at the Berkeley Art Center. If you want to be transported into
another, beautiful world, you can hear him play.
Linda
I have been taking acoustic guitar lessons with Caren Armstrong
for over a year now, and I wish I had met her a long time ago!
Caren is a local singer/songwriter/performer. She is very
knowledgeable, intelligent and a terrific guitar player and
teacher. I have been consistently impressed with her ability to
tailor the lessons to my interests and needs. She can be reached
by phone (510-339-9649) or email (carensing@aol.com).

My Husband loves to play, just needs more instruction to move
forward. It would be great if lessons were on the weekends or
weeknights. And on the affordable side since we just had a
baby. We live in Berkeley so something in the area is best. If
anyone has any recommendations I would appreciate it. I have
browsed the old posts, but would love some current offerings.

I have been taking classical guitar lessons for about 1.5 years
from Ron Galen, who teaches at Tupper and Reed on Shattuck,
south of University in Berkeley. His rates are reasonable
($30/30 min., or $60/60 min.), and I find him to be an
excellent adult teacher: patient yet exacting, great sense of
humor yet serious about playing well. He is well-trained,
plays in a Brazilian band, and continues to push himself as
well as his students. I find that he is understanding about my
desire to play, yet can't always manage to practice as much as
I (or he) would like. Good luck to your husband!
Lessons for 7-8 Year Olds
March 2003
Not long ago, someone asked for recommendations for a guitar
teacher for their child. I was looking, as well, for my
eight-year-old and called three of the four teachers(one phone
number was wrong), and found that they had different approaches
and all but one weren't taking new students.
Any recommendations for teachers?
would like to let other parents know of a multi-talented music
teacher in the Piedmont/North Oakland area. Maurice Charriere
has been teaching music, dance and drama to kids from pre-K
through Middle School for over 20 years. His semi-private
classes offer lots of hands-on experiences with percussion
instruments, as well as singing, improvisations, music theory
and an introduction to the guitar. My 7-year-old son truly
enjoys playing raucous music with the other 3 kids. Because of
this well-rounded music training, he was inspired to take up
piano lessons recently and has been practicing willingly at home
without much urging on my part. Classes for Pre-K,
Kindergarteners, and First Graders are offered on Wednesdays
after school. He charges $15 an hour. Maurice also offers
private guitar lessons for older kids. If you need more
information, please call him at (510) 654-7439. 3/13/03

My 7 year old son has been learning guitar from Leo Garcia
for two years now, and has made amazing progress. Leo
can find something positive to say about every child, is
always upbeat, kind, and gentle, and makes the lessons a
lot of fun. We started in a class with one other child, which
was great in terms of them making music together, then
moved to private lessons when the children's rate of
progress started to differ. There are advantages for both
private and group lessons. I respect Leo Garcia's teaching
and musicianship tremendously and highly recommend
him.

Larry Klein is a guitar instructor for both adults and children.
He works from his home in N. Berkeley (right near the library)and
runs the guitar program for Berkeley Arts Magnet school. On top
of his talent, he is really nice guy! He can be reached at 526-2988.
Lisa T.
Adam Lipansky is a fabulous guitar teacher. He teaches folks of
all ages and teaches both in Alameda and Dublin. He is
schooled in jazz (Berkeley school of music in Boston) and
teaches kids and adults about theory and improvization. The
kids get to play whatever music they want, but instead of just
memorizing it, he teaches what is going on, so the kids
understand music, and later have the ability to sit in on
anyone playing, jam with friends and or write their own music.
He takes them to a real recording music studio once a year
where they can put down a demo, and once or twice a year people
can join an open mic night through the dublin facility. his
number is 510.337.0762. Have fun !

I recommend Gyan Riley as a classical guitar teacher. He has
recently graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music,
his father is a famous composer, and Gyan is young, personable
and accessible. He travels from SF to the Bay Area to give
lessons. His e-mail address is gwunderthump@yahoo.com, or he
has a website: gyanriley.com. He is sometimes available by
telephone (415) 566-2871.

Michael Goldberg is a wonderful guitar instructor for kids. You
can reach him at 510.486.1863. He also teaches a beginning
group class at Crowden Music Center, 510.559.2941.

I recommend Brian Bertino. My 14-year-old has had 5
lessons with him and she already sounds pretty good. He
is incredibly nice. A couple of my daughter's friends
recommended him to us. His phone number is 845-4704.

I'd like to recommend Adam Lipansky as a great guitar teacher
for your 7 year old. Adam's background is jazz (studied at the
Berklee School of Music) and teaches kids the songs they want to
learn (rock, kids music, etc) and music theory, which eventually
leads kids to be able to improvise and sit in with any friends
when they get to high school age. If you want your child to just
play music from memory and not understand what he/she is doing,
he is not the teacher for you. He can be reached at
415.377.8567. He lives and teaches in Alameda now, but also
teaches up in Dublin too. Have fun!

Two recommendations for a guitar teacher. I have taken lessons from Robin

A piano (and guitar) teacher in north Berkeley who has a good reputation is
Robbie Dunbar, 925 962-2200. I haven't taken any lessons from him but I know
him as a dad at my son's preschool. Betsy
Bass Guitar
My daughter and several of her friends take bass guitar lessons from Kerry
Yates at a place next door to Subway Guitars on Cedar St. in
Berkeley. They really like him alot; it's an easy walk from King or BHS;
and he has a very reasonable sliding scale. I don't have his number on me,
but I think it's posted on the window there, or e-mail me & I'll try to
find it. randice
Guitar for Teen
Reply for Guitar Teacher. I highly recommend Jim Gleason. He is able to
teach teens at their own level - uses whatever music they like to get them
excited about guitar. He teaches out of his home in Piedmont. His number
is 923-9522.

Electric Guitar for Teen
My son, age 12, takes electric guitar lessons from Brooks Lundy, an exuberant
and talented twenty-something year old man who has is also studying for his
teaching credential. Brooks is very positive and very open to Jesse's
musical interests (Hendrix and Santana) while teaching him lots of technique.
He's near Lake Merritt in Oakland. His number is 465-3029.
Lili (2/00)
For about a year my son has been taking bass guitar lessons from Jack Gates
at Blue Note Music on Telegraph 644-2583 learning rock n roll. He
seems to like him a lot.
Ginger (2/00)
I highly recommend Chris Solberg as an electric bass guitar and guitar
teacher for teens. My son, 13, takes weekly lessons for 1/2 hour for
$25/lesson. Chris really pushes him, yet imbues a love of music at the
same time. Plus, my son thinks he is cool because he was the guitar
player with Santana in the early 1980s. Chris teaches at Tupper & Reed
in downtown Berkeley and also gives lessons in other locations. He's
very flexible, fun, and devoted. He even came to the King Jr. High band
performance a few months ago! His phone # is 510-547-8719.
Maureen
My son has been taking guitar lessons from a wonderful man in
Berkeley. He is quite patient, and "hip". He likes the student to
pick which tunes to learn and my son is playing alot of Rolling Stones
and Beatles tunes. He is taking accoustic but it all translates to
electric. He is on Cedar and Grant (maybe it's Mc Gee) behind Subway
Guitars, the little white building with all the clouds on it. The
teacher's name is Brian and his phone is 845-4704

My 15 year old son has been taking guitar lessons from Robbie Dunbar
for the last 3 years or so. Robbie is an incredible musician, but
beyond that he is full of life - unbelievably enthusiastic about
teaching music. My son is always in a good mood after his lesson.
Robbie comes to our home weekly and charges a reasonable rate. We
tried two other teachers prior to him, both of whom were good
musicians, but who really didn't seemed that enthused about teaching
music. I wholeheartedly recommend him! If you want further info
please e-mail me.

Regarding the request for a hip but patient guitar teacher: Our 15-year old
son has had a wonderful experience studying piano with Robbie Dunbar, who
teaches electric and acoustic guitar as well as piano in Berkeley, Oakland,
and the Walnut Creek area, and who is also an active performer, chiefly on
electric guitar. He is extremely supportive to kids at all levels. We've
probably heard over 100 of his guitar students at recitals over the years,
and their enthusiasm has been impressive. He's at (925)962-2200.

Re: a guitar teacher for an adult beginner, I recommend Robin Flower,
510-482-9479. She teaches out of her home in the Glenview neighborhood of
Oakland. She teaches all styles and all ages and is a truly gifted and
experienced instructor. She and her partner perform locally as the singing
duo "Flower and MacLaren."

You didn't say what kind of guitar you are interested in studying -- but if
you are interested in acoustic, and interested in folk music with an
emphasis on finger picking, Barry Olivier is your guy. He's been teaching
for over 40 years, and was a key figure in the Berkeley folk music scene.
I've studied with him for a few years he's wonderful - patient, kind, and
knowledgeable. For Barry, it's all about the joy of making music. He has a
funky studio in Rockridge, and can be reached at 510-530-5525.

My friend STEVE GIBSON is an excellent guitar teacher who works with
both adults and children, at all levels of experience. Steve teaches private
lessons at his house in Oakland, near Piedmont Ave./Mountain View Cemetary. He
specializes in teaching rock and jazz styles.
He and his partner Jeremy Steinkohler (drum instructor) run group
classes through Band Works, and they produce student concerts about every two
months at Ashkanaz, which are very very fun community events. Both have taught
for several years at Cazadero Family Music Camp in summer.
I've known Steve since we were 18 (we're now in our mid-30s) -- he is a
wonderful, funny, warm guy, an excellent musician, and gets very high praise
from his students.
He might not be taking any new students at the moment, but he could
probably reccommend other teachers, or put you on a waiting list. In any case, I
would start with Steve for information about taking lessons from him or
information about other teachers and classes. His number is (510) 420-1895.
