Drop-in classes
Does anyone out there know of any aerobic or similar classes running
in North Berkeley or environs which you can attend as a drop-in rather
than signing up for a session? They would have to be either in the
evening or with child-care during the morning.a Childcare and family
committments make signing up for a session very difficult - and I
would prefer to attend a class for motivational reasons rather than
just drop in at a gym.

No Sweat on Solano Avenue has a drop-in policy for their many various classes.
There isn't child care available, but they have kickboxing, hiphop, salsa, and
samba dancing (along with other kinds of stuff). Lots of fun and definite communities
in some of the classes. It costs $9/class, but it's cheaper if you buy a multiple class
card. They're at 1831 Solano Ave. (next to Peet's). 528-1958.

Cal-FIT on campus (you can get info from Health*Matters, among other places)
offers a drop-in card that you can use on some of the classes (depends if there's
space). You don't have to be a student or employee either--community members
are allowed; it's just that students or staff get a slight discount.
Call 642-5151 for more info.

There is NoSweat on Solano (more or less in front
of Andronico's). They have drop-in classes for
several kinds of things (hip-hop, aerobics, etc)
and (if I'm not mistaken) they cost $9.00 each.
hope it helps!

I'm looking for a place that offers step classes, preferably on a drop-in basis
where you pay a fee for that class (or a class-card). I'm moving in less than
5 months, so health club memberships don't look like a great idea with all the
initiation fees. I found Pulse in El Cerrito and No Sweat on
Solano in Berkeley, but they both only have morning classes. There's also
the YMCA
in Albany with the reduced community membership, but nothing is totally ideal.
Any other ideas? Or if you've used any of these places, did you like the
classes/instructors?
Can non-students do the Cal Rec center?

The Cal Fit program on Campus offers short term classes (6 weeks each or so).
Non students (and even non-campus members) can take them. My Water Exercise
class costs something like $87 for 12 sessions (I think, with some
discounts available
for staff or students (as opposed to community). If space is available,
they will let
you add a class late and pro-rate. They also offer drop-in classes for
about $10
each. I don't know about step aerobics in particular, however. Call 643-5151
for more information or to request a brochure.

I've been taking classes at Pulse (recently moved to San Pablo Avenue)
for years and love the instructors, the class members and the work out I
get. Classes can definitely be taken on drop in basis.
But, you are right. Because of the move to a new studio, there are only
morning step classes (including Sat and Sun), but they do have a weight
room which is available in the evening.
Have you considered Jazzercize for a period of time on Jacuzzi street.
They do drop in and have evening classes.
