What age to begin using?

I've grown up in Germany, where we all had down comforters. My grandmother just sent one over for our baby. Although I hear how babies shouldnt be with blankets, (especially down), at what age can you start having them sleep with down blankets? He's 10 months old now (gosh that was fast), and sleeps either with cotton or soft wool blankets or a sleep sack from bigfoot.com. Thanks for sharing your advice/opinion! felicia
