UC Families (Family and Career in Academic Settings) is a newsletter that started in 2005 as a resource for faculty, staff and students at University of California campuses and elsewhere, who are balancing academic goals or careers with family life. The UC Families (Family and Career in Academic Settings) home page provides family resources on UC campuses, UC-wide policy and benefits information, and archives of past advice and discussions.
Subscribers can post questions or engage in discussions on topics such as managing work and family responsibilities, planning the optimal time to start a family, finding advice on progressing academically as a student parent, returning to academia after having a baby, or advocating for flexible work arrangements.
UC Families (Family and Career in Academic Settings) is the most recent newsletter addition to the
Berkeley Parents Network,
a no-fee Bay Area parent-to-parent advice newsletter serving more than 18,000 families. It is also a collaboration with the UC Faculty Family Friendly Edge Initiative, designed to develop and implement a comprehensive package of innovative work-family policies and programs for ladder-rank faculty in the UC system.
Depending on where you live, whether you are a UC affiliate, and what you
are looking for, you may want to subscribe to only one or the other.
TOPICS
BPN provides advice, recommendations, reviews, announcements and
resources on a variety of topics (e.g., how to get your baby to sleep
through the night, childcare provider recommendations, upcoming community
events, where to go for a holiday in Hawaii, selling or seeking furniture,
etc.)
UC Families (Family and Career in Academic Settings) is a single newsletter of the BPN, and focuses on issues
related to balancing academic goals or careers with family life (e.g., the
optimal time to start a family, how to manage work and family needs,
returning to academia with a baby, negotiating for flexible arrangements or
leaves, etc.)

The UC Faculty Family Friendly Edge, funded by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is an initiative designed to develop and implement a comprehensive package of innovative family friendly policies and programs for ladder-rank faculty in the UC system
(ucfamilyedge.berkeley.edu). The project has received prominent national attention for its research about work and family issues in academia and the UC system.
One important goal of the Family Friendly Edge project is to create an avenue for all UC community members to engage in meaningful discussion on issues relevant to balancing work and family life within the UC. We decided to collaborate with the Berkeley Parents Network to develop this forum because of its strong reputation in the Bay Area and beyond. It is our hope that this newsletter will fill a significant gap in communication between members at all levels of the UC community, and serve as an important resource for student, staff, and faculty parents.
