What goes in the House & Garden newsletter?

There are five sections in the House & Garden newsletter that subscribers can post a message to:

  1. New Questions
    Ask questions about products and services for the home and garden. Examples include electricians, realtors, plumbers, contractors, or advice about buying a house, doing home repairs, etc.

  2. Replies
    Reply to a question that appeared in a previous newsletter.

  3. Housekeepers, Pets, Garden Maintenance
    Ask for or offer recommendations for housekeepers as well as pet sitters, household organizers, cooks, personal assistants, and other people who work in the home.

  4. Housing, Rentals, Shares, House-sits
    Ask for or offer house-sitting opportunities, shared housing, short-term rentals, etc.

Can I post a message about my business?

You may not post a promotional announcement to the House & Garden newsletter unless you are a housekeeper, pet sitter, or similar person who provides a service that takes place in a family's home. However, you can recommend yourself or your business in response to a request for the type of business you provide. I can't find housekeepers on the website

We do not archive recommendations for individuals such as housekeepers to the website for privacy reasons. To request or give a recommendation for a housekeeper, you must post to the newsletter.

Housing Wanted and Housing Available sections

Since the mission of BPN is to be useful for parents, messages about housing need to be relevant in some way to the people who are reading the newsletter. Per BPN Rules, "messages should be generally interesting, informative, or useful for other parents. Newsletters may not be used as a vehicle for broadcasting personal messages to as many people as possible." Acceptable postings about housing can include not only apartments and houses for families, but also short-term housing for visiting in-laws, house exchanges, vacation cabins, and the like. We cannot accept posts about housing that would not be suitable for families, such as a student apartment or an "adults only" condo. Please instead use craigslist, or Cal Rentals at UC Berkeley, or one of the rental agencies in the area.

I hired a person/business recommended in the newsletter who has been a problem

The Berkeley Parents Network has no way to check out people or businesses that are recommended in the newsletters. The messages in the newsletters and on the website are reviews and opinions sent in by Berkeley Parents Net subscribers. Your own experience may be different. Please always check references before hiring!

You can post a review of your bad experience if it conforms to the Negative Review Policy. You can also write to the moderator if you have a problem with person who has posted about their business in the newsletter.
