http://parents.berkeley.edu/FAQ/hotmail.txt This page details the efforts to get the Berkeley Parents Network (BPN) newsletters past the hotmail spam filter. Since Jan 2007, hotmail has been blocking newsletters to more than 2,000 hotmail customers who subscribe to the BPN. No notice of this blocking is sent to the customer or to the sender of the newsletters. None of our efforts to resolve this have resulted in any response from hotmail. 5/31/2007 Appears hotmail is still blocking all BPN newsletters and not notifying customers of this. The email administrator for BPN is also not receiving any notification, although we are receiving occasional reports of inactive hotmail accounts on the subscriber list. 4/24/2007 We now recommend that people who want to receive BPN newsletters stop using hotmail for their email. 4/7/07: Hotmail asked a BPN subscriber to mail an example of a newsletter to randomtestacct[at]hotmail.com and let them know what the subject and date on the email was so they can investigate. I did this, and conveyed that info to the hotmail subscriber. No response from hotmail. 3/29/07: Hotmail says to answer the questions on their "Sender Information form". I tell them I did that on 3/22 and refer them to the result below. No response from hotmail. 3/28/07: Hotmail told BPN that "Only our domain delivery support team will be able to resolve it." I asked Hotmail to please advise how to contact the domain delivery support team. 3/26/07: Hotmail told a BPN subscriber that the problem is mail coming from the address lists.berkeley.edu, and that the BPN administrator should fill out Hotmail's Postmaster site. The subscriber pointed out that the BPN administrator has already done that (response is below) but the filter is still in place. No response from hotmail. 3/22/07: Filled out hotmail's lengthy form to report trouble sending mail to hotmail subscribers. Response from hotmail is below. 3/5/07: Hotmail tech support advised a BPN subscriber that hotmail is blocking mail from lists.berkeley.edu (the address used by BPN and many other mailing lists at UC Berkeley) due to stricter spam policies. 2/15/07: reports from some BPN hotmail subscribers saying they are receiving some newsletters but not all, especially not Marketplace. This appears to be a case of hotmail blocking some BPN newsletters based on content. Hotmail is not providing info back to BPN about this. Date: March 22, 2007 7:38am To: ginger[at]berkeley.edu From: Microsoft Email Delivery Support Hello Ginger, We have identified that messages from your IP (169.229.248.172) are being filtered based on the recommendations of the SmartScreen filter. SmartScreen is the spam filtering technology developed and operated by Microsoft. SmartScreen is built around the technology of machine learning. SmartScreen’s filters are trained to recognize what is spam and what isn’t spam. In short, we filter incoming emails that look like spam. I am not able to go into any specific details about what these filters specifically entail, as this would render them useless. Please confirm that your emails comply with MSN Hotmail’s technical standards. This information can be found at: http://postmaster.live.com/Guidelines.aspx It will also be helpful to send example emails to randomtestacct@hotmail.com from your MTA so that we can examine the types of emails that you send. This will help me in our investigation. When you do this please send me the subject lines of emails you have sent. Please make sure that these emails are functionally similar to the types of emails that originate from your system, as any deviation from this may hinder our ability to investigate your problem. Do not use the word, “Test” or anything that would change the email from the original message that was initially sent to Hotmail Customers. I hope that the information that I have provided to you has been helpful. You may also be able to find additional information on common delivery questions at the Hotmail Postmaster Site found at: http://postmaster.msn.com/. I would like to highlight some key areas which I believe are appropriate to your company. * Hotmail has created the Smart Network Data Services program. This is a service that helps legitimate email senders work with their customers and partners to reduce spam originating from their IP. http://postmaster.msn.com/snds/. This program allows a sender to monitor the ‘health’ of their IPs. * I would also strongly recommend that you register with Sender ID. You can find additional information at http://www.microsoft.com/senderID or you may email senderid@microsoft.com for support. * Monitor user complaints. Hotmail also has a sender complaint feedback loop program Junk Email Reporting Program (JMRP). Enrollment in this, free of charge, program will benefit you as a sender as it will keep your e-mail lists updated and populated with interested MSN Hotmail Customers. Participation in this program will remove those MSN Hotmail Customers who do not want to receive e-mails from your company. If you are interested in joining this program please visit Http://support.msn.com/eform.aspx?productKey=edfsjmrpp&page=support_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts. While using the SNDS tool, enrollment in the JMRP or having your IPs registered with Sender ID will not allow emails from your mail servers to bypass our filters, these are in place to help legitimate companies deliver their emails to Hotmail Customers. * SenderScore Certified Mail Program. Many legitimate mailers and marketers have qualified and joined this “white listing” program to improve mail deliverability and decrease email from being filtered to the Junk E-mail Folder. Sender Score is a third party program, administered by Return Path. Sender Score (www.senderscorecertified.com) is the only White Listing service to which we subscribe. The troubleshooting steps in this email are recommendations only. Microsoft makes no guarantees that following these steps will guarantee deliverability to MSN, Hotmail, or Live.com customers. My primary care physician believes it is/might be a basal cell carcinoma and because of its placement is not able/willing to do the biopsy herself. She has given me a referral to a plastic surgeon: Dr. Javaheri. Then today I ran into a colleague who just had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his nose and he said that by no means should I go to a plastic surgeon, but instead should work with a dermatologist. And finally, given that it is so close to my eye, I wonder if another specialist *e.g. otolaryngologist* wouldn't be more appropriate. Any advice about who might be best? Also, I'm a nursing mother. Tired Tessie Carseat safety inspection? ------------------------------------------- Where should I go to make sure that my infant car seat is properly installed? anon Changing custody arrangement -- how to do? ------------------------------------------- My ex-husband and I have one child together -- I have primary physical custody and we have joint legal custody. He has time with our child 1-2 days week, including 1 overnight. When we negotiated the custody agreement he was sober, and had been for a couple of years. Over the past 8 months he has relapsed repeatedly, which involves a week or more of binge drinking, and in the last two months he has been drinking for more days than he is sober. As much as I want a co-parent for my child, I am realizing that I can not rely on a situation that is so unpredictable. I do not want to worry and feel anxious every time I leave my child with him -- he is rarely honest with me about whether or not he has been drinking, which leaves me in a position to make a snap judgment during the transition time, which is very stressful. I am exhausted from negotiating these waters alone, and I think it would be helpful to have the legal custody arrangement changed to reflect the current situation. In addition to a recommendation for a good attorney *I'm posting to recommendations too*, I'd love some feedback on whether this is even possible. From what I've been reading, custody issues are very much in the hands of the judge, and they generally do not like to restrict the child's time with the non-custodial parent. Does anyone have any experience with this and a drinking or drug problem? What I would like to do is get sole legal custody with supervised visitation, but don't know if that is wishful thinking. anon Co-sleeping with infant and toddler ------------------------------------------- We are co-sleeping with our toddler and expecting a newborn in a couple of months. We plan to continue co-sleeping, in addition to having the crib next to the bed for the newborn. I anticipate that we will sleep all 4 of us in our king-sized bed more often than not, due to nursing the newborn, and from experience, because our firstborn never took to the crib at all. I know that all babies and all families are different, but I'd like to hear others' experiences in anticipation of this big change in our lives. I'm looking for some insight into what life is going to be like once our second child is born. Will our toddler *who will be about 2 years old* be way too disturbed by the newborn's night waking to be able to sleep well in the same room with all of us? Perhaps she'll become accustomed to the noise and just sleep through it? I also think it may be too dangerous to have both of them sleep in bed together in the earlier part of the night before we *the parents* come to bed, just because of the dangers of the toddler's movements and potential for accidentally smothering the baby. Have other people found this to be true? Another concern is how to get both of them to sleep? I'm not sure whether our toddler or newborn will be going to bed first, because at least in the beginning, I'm sure their sleep schedules won't be in sync. So if one is already asleep in the room, are there recommended ways of getting the second to sleep without disturbing the other? Are there any tips and tricks people have used to make this type of situation work out? We used a white noise cd with our firstborn for about 9 months or so, and I'm not sure if this is something to re-introduce when the new baby comes. Thanks!
