Problems Delivering BPN Newsletters to Comcast Addresses

Berkeley Parents Network > Help & Frequently Asked Questions >

Comcast frequently blocks all further mail from BPN

Every few weeks, Comcast starts blocking all BPN newsletters. The blocking continues until someone fills out Comcast's form. If you notice you are not receiving your BPN newsletters, please fill out Comcast's "Blocked Provider Request Form" here: http://www.comcastsupport.com/Forms/NET/blockedprovider.asp Domain = berkeley.edu and IP address = 169.229.248.172

Comcast's spam filter frequently misidentifies legitimate email as spam, and Comcast then blocks all further email from that sender, without notifying its customers. There is nothing that Comcast customers can do to pro-actively prevent the block. Comcast does not appear to have the technology that other email carriers have to put "safe" senders like BPN on a white list. Comcast customers should be aware that they are not receiving all their mail. BPN recommends using some other email service besides Comcast.

Filled out their form ONCE AGAIN.

April 17, 2009: Attempts to remove the block have been unsuccessful. Starting to get lots of mail from Comcast subscribers asking about their newsletters. Sent email to the security guy who fixed the problem in 2007. He doesn't work there now but he notified the right person and they removed the block.

April 9, 2009: Comcast is blocking newsletters again. "(reason: 554 IMTA01.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net comcast 169.229.248.172 Comcast block for spam."
Filled out "Blocked Provider Request Form" at http://www.comcastsupport.com/Forms/NET/blockedprovider.asp. Request to unblock was rejected because "we have determined that you are sending email from a dynamic/residential IP within the Comcast domain." Huh? Filled out the form a second time. Same result. Filled out the form a third time 4/16/2009. Same response as before.

Aug 1, 2008: Comcast is blocking again, [SIGH} filling out form again. (reason: 554 IMTA03.emeryville.ca.mail.comcast.net comcast 169.229.248.172 Comcast BL004 Blocked for spam.)

4/3/07: It appears Comcast has stopped blocking BPN newsletters. Yay!

3/29/07: Comcast is still blocking ALL mail from BPN, including welcome messages to new subscribers. This is a block on the BPN address, not just on content. Comcast has not explained why they are blocking, nor how comcast customers can remove the block.

3/3/2007: Comcast starts blocking again. BPN again contacted comcast about this problem. Since November, comcast has been identifying BPN newsletters as spam. BPN has repeatedly requested our IP to be unblocked. Comcast has unblocked temporarily, but the blocks have resumed.

1/30/2007: Comcast starts blocking again. BPN sends email again to the security guy at Comcast. He issues a 30-day unblock.

1/9/2007: Comcast starts blocking again. BPN sends an email to the security guy who replied to our previous block. He issues a 7-day unblock to "give us time to remove non-existent email addresses."

12/12/2006: After numerous complaints from BPN subscribers, Comcast removes the block. BPN is notified that the problem is that we are sending too many newsletters to comcast accounts that no longer exist. However, Comcast never notified us about these non-existent accounts and also will not provide the non-existent email addresses so we can remove them.

11/25/2006: Comcast begins blocking all BPN newsletters as spam.
